Paper trained but night time accidents - is it just laziness??
 

My 2- year old female Yorkie :aimeeyork is paper trained. She has a large puppy pen (with the two levels so pee falls to papers below) that she stays in during the day while we are at work. At night, she alternates sleeping with us and in her doggie bed on an ottoman at the foot of our bed. Her sleeping arrangements are a whole other subject!!

We keep her pen in the bathroom beside our bed room. At the beginning (after she finally "got it" where she was supposed to go), we would keep the bathroom door open but she would not always hop up into the pen and we would wake up to find pee and poop all over the bathroom floor. My husband seemed to think she was just half asleep when she got up and was too lazy to jump into the kennel. We would try to catch her when she got up, but being sound asleep and all, weren't all that consistent. Plus, how many of you have yelled "no" to a squatting dog only to wake a sleeping, grumpy husband? :eek:

Anyway, after one too many times of scrubbing the grout in my tile bathroom floor :mad: , we started closing the bathroom door. Now, she scratches the door to be let into the bathroom. This would not be a problem if she would only go once or twice a night. It seems between myself and my husband, we get up at least 3-4 times a night! I am afraid if we just ignore her, she will either a.) pee on the carpet in front of the bathroom door (which she has done before) or b.) just keep scratching the door until everyone wakes up anyway.

How do we teach her to hold it? Since she has access to her pen/papers all day long - she really has never learned the bladder control like a dog who goes outside would have. I have started pulling up her food and water before we go to bed (she used to have access to the water all night - I thought it might be cruel for her to have no water down- my husband said after she peed at 2 or 3 in the morning, she was just going in there to re-fill the tank!) but now I am thinking we are not pulling it up early enough. What is too early for having no water down and is that cruel?? :confused:

I love my little girl, but she definitely exhibits a lot of the "typical" Yorkie traits - stubborness, etc. SHE IS SO SPOILED!! We just need to get a full night of sleep soon!!

I would like to know the same thing. We have a yorkie girl that we got about two months ago...she wants to get up at 3:30am ect to go outside. I have a boy yorkie named Remmy and he is fine until I let him out. He would hold it till 9am but we usually get up around 6:30am. We have started to crate her cuz she will get up in the middle of the night and poop and pee. This morning she was up moving around and whinning at 3am...I was not a happy camper and moved her crate to another room and choose to ignore her. I want her to conform to my schedule. Anyways she pooped and peed in her crate. I thought dogs were prewired not to eliminate in there sleeping quarters.

The first week I got Pebbles I kept her in a cage as well, and everyone kept telling me that she would not pee or poop in her cage. YEA RIGHT! She was full of it and had to bathe her. I also think it was because I was at work and it was 8 hours. She is still not trained at the age of three months, today she went on her wee wee pad for the first time. Let's see what happens!

I am getting so fed up with Mocha... I feel like she'll never get this potty thing down... I keep paper by my apartment door and I put another piece down in my dining room (an area she's been going to alot).. She also has her pee pad down i nthe kitchen where she spends her day when I am at work.. Anyway, i get home and theres pee and poop everywhere except where it should be.. I will wake up at 6 am to take her outside and wait 10 mins and she wont pee but as we get inside she goes in my living room, bedroom, or bathroom (on the rugs) I am getting so annoyed that I want to scream... She also doesn't respond to "NO".. she still bites and chews even when I yell

I'm having the same issue with moose, she will be 4 months come may 6, I am crate training her and she's is 90% fine, I have a pee pad by the door to the back yard, I don't want to take her outside till she got the going to pee pad right. When we are together she does fine and she is not doing anything in the crate but.....I decided about the begining of April that she was doing good so she could sleep in my bed. First night went good she needed to go she woke me up, then for some reason a couple of night later she left and didn't wake me up...well that morning my dad found a suprise in his office, which is the complete oppisite direction of the pad!!!!!!! So know she's back to sleeping in her crate and I don't like it...Lil Bear use to sleep with me till she decided my parents bed was better, I miss the warmth plus I feel safer...yeah crazy I know. What's wrong, too much freedom too soon.

Hope someone will be able to help us all with our pups

To much freedom to soon can cause a lot of it. They have to have certain boundaries set, before they get more. My girl is almost 2 and if we leave her out of her crate at night she will potty somewhere in the house. After a few nights of her crying and getting everyone up at 2am I moved her to the farthest end of the house. She finally got the idea that no matter what she said it was bed time. There is no food after 6pm and no water after 9pm, usually. Once she got older and her bladder got stronger that changed.
THe little ones need to spend at least 30 minutes outside if possible, before bed, so they can fid plenty of spots to potty.Try crating them at night you might have a few accidents, but that shall past with time. Hopefully. Once you have done that and have gone a few weeks without wake ups or accidents move thier crate closer to your bed, then if possible put it on your bed. then take them out and see where you stand.
THese are just things that work for me and my pets. We all know that yorkies are a different story. :)

part of hte problem is that she cannot SEE you through the bathroom door.... Maybe get a gate (i recomend a TALL one so you wont get her jumping over it)

Believe me I feel for you, I am in the same boat. I just read here to have patience, hopefully someday, before we loose our patience. Believe me you are not alone

Oh my gosh how scary two years old and still not trained completely, I hope I can have lots of patience because mine is only three months, I did not know that they were this hard to train. Thank God that I adore her!!!!

when toby has an accident in the house (its been a while..... thank god) my fiance tells him "youre lucky youre cute".....lol

how cute. It is cute at the beginning but then it is not soo cute! If you know what I mean.

Too much freedom is probably the issue. It definatley takes time. Baxter wasn't completely potty trained for months and months. He's 1 1/2 now and he's good. He goes to the door, and if that doesn't get your attention, he will go to where we keep his leesh (close to the door) and look at it and look at us. If I left him run the whole house today while I was at work, he would definatley go though. I keep him in his crate while at work.

The way that I potty trained him was not paper. The breeder did, but as soon as I brought him home (12 weeks) I took him outside ever hour. When he went, I made a huge deal of it. As we went along, it was every 2 hours, then every few hours and so on down. I used a crate at night time. Far away from me. He caught on quick that when it's time for bed, it's time. He didn't start sleeping in our beds until he was potty trained. Now, he goes to bed in our beds and he doesn't "go" until we let him out in the morning.

This has worked very well for us. He's a good boy.
