Help barking/chasing guests exiting house My little man is always sweet and non-aggressive. But for some reason he is affectionate to guest entering my house but then jumps down barking and nipping at their ankles when they get ready to go out the door. If anyone has suggestions I would appreciate it. Thanks-Evie |
Get between your pup and your guests that are leaving -- and with your feet and legs - force him to go in the opposite direction. Don't allow him to follow right behind people that are leaving. Have them going one way (toward the door) and your pup going the opposite direction --at least to a point where he can sit and stay. I have my dog trained to stay back from the door about 8 feet whenever people are coming or going. I doubt you'll have any trouble training your dog to do this - it was easy for me. But, if you do, I would simply hold my dog whenever people leave. Don't talk to him - ignore him - just hold him and visit with your guests as they leave. Then - still don't talk to him - just take him back to the center of the house and put him down and go and do something else. Be sure you give him no attention or affection at this time. (You need him to learn that when people leave - he is to stay back and sit -- or - at least not be recognized as a part of anything that is going on.) I wouldn't pay any attention to him or say one word to him for about 5 minutes after people leave. Then - everything can be back to normal........ **** My sister used to put her dog in the bathroom whenever people came or went.... Good luck! Carol Jean |
