help! My 4 month old Napoleon has come a long way!. when we first got him at 8 weeks, it was like full-blown baby mode. sleep eat pee poop and repeat. Now at 4 months, we take him out at 6:30 then at about 8:30-9, then around 6 and once more at around 9, and thats only if we gave him some training treats. This is my question, at 4 months old or around that age, how many times are they SUPPOSED to go outside?? should I be taking him out less? I can almost sense it already when he needs to poop but he still pees on the peepad when he needs to. I guess it is not possible to control the peeing till his bladder has developed a little. |
he is still a puppy . .which means they are very active and playful. Depending on how active they are, they sure pee more often at this stage. You should take him out more frequently unless you want to rely on the pad as well . . . |
I don't understand what you're trying to do?? That doesn't sound like it's enough to me. If he's still going on his pee-pad, obviously he needs to go outside more often. Or do you only want him to poop outside? Loki is fully housetrained (never used pee-pads) and 1 1/2 years old and I let him out every 1-2 hours, either to pee or poop or both. He rings his bell when he needs to do either one of those and I let him out. I think 3 hours sounds crazy for a 4 month old. |
What I am trying to do is get him to pee and poop only outside. I fully respect those of you who can stay home and let out the puppies every 1-2 hours or so, but I can't do that because I work and my puppy is home for about 5 hours a day. at 6:30 am I take him out, again at 8:30 and then as soon as I come home. He hasnt had an accident in a month so I think thats pretty good but i guess there is nothing i can do when it comes to him peeing because I cant just quit my job to follow him around all day and he can;t let himself out.. so i guess weewee pads will have to be dealt during the time I am not home. I hope his bladder gets stronger though... I dont want to use weewee pads forever. By the way I should note that recently he hasn't been peeing much during the time I am not home, although this morning after a long walk we come inside and an hour later he goes and pees on the pad! |
Correction: Is Home Alone For 5 Hours A Day |

Just be careful with the pee pads. Once they learn it's OK to use them, it's not easy to just take them away. He might find another place to go. Maybe try crating him while you are gone and having someone let him out 1/2 way through? In another 1 or 2 months he will be able to hold it 5 hours in a crate. |
