Paper train or outdoors? Oliver is coming home in a few weeks and I have been reading like mad on ways to train him. Here's my question: Do you have your dog paper trained, trained to go outside, or both? What are the benefits of the way your dog is trained? If you trained your dog to do both, did you train one way first? Sorry for all the questions! I always thought I would train him to go outdoors, but I think paper training has a lot of benefits. And if he's paper trained, do I need to have him trained to go outdoors? I am not sure any more. I am looking forward to everyone's answers! Thanks! |
I like outdoor training because of the lack of cleaning inside. You don't have to worry about cleaning before they get to it or anything like that. But if you are not home enough to take your pup outside as often as necessary paper is the way to go. |
I think it really depends on how much time you'll be home. Obviously if you work all day, you won't be at home to take her out and thus you'll need to leave paper down for her to potty on. If you are at home all day and are able to take the time to train her, then I feel that outside is the way to go. We have outside trained our oldest yorkie and are in the process of training our baby we just got yesterday. We did it (are doing it now) by taking them outside every two hours, 20 minutes after they eat, everytime they wake up from a nap, and everytime they get done playing. Eventually Hobbs just started running to the door everytime he had to go potty. Since we put a lot of effort into from the very beginning, it only took about 2 weeks for Hobbs to get the hang of it. We're crossing our fingers that Reese will catch on quickly from watching her big brother! I personally think that outside is more convenient for occassions when you have company or when you need to take your yorkie to a friend or relative's house. But, in places that have really extreme climates, or like I said earlier, if you do not have the time to train her to go outside, then paper is definately a good option. If you want to do both, I would do paper first. Then, gradually move the paper closer and closer to the door and then one day put the paper outside. Then one day you'll be able to remove the paper all together. Good luck! |
My adult dogs are trained to go outside. I hate it. When it is raining or snowing, I do not want to go out let alone the dogs. My mom has her Maltese pee pad trained. That is amazing. She will go outside also. She was pee pad trained first. Yesterday I had a dinner at my house. My Aunt brought her Yorkie and my Mom brought her Maltese. Plus I have 2 baby Morkies. They all used the same two pee pads. Good luck with whatever you decide. Enjoy your new baby. |
Zoey is trained both ways. Since it gets extremely hot here, I don't like her going outside..so she uses the pee pad. |

Mine are trained on the disposable puppy pads because we got Pippa in the middle of winter with snow on the ground. I couldn't bear to take tiny puppy out to pee in the cold! Scout just followed Pippa's lead when he came along. That said, I have occcasionally wished they were trained outside (even though they will go outside when they are on walks) for a few reasons: 1. The pee pads cost money. I pay $50.00 for a case of 200. A case lasts me about 3 months. 2. When company comes over, I get a little embarrassed when the dogs happen to do #2 before I notice. (They always hit the pad, though!) We have a small house, so there's really not a very out of the way place to put the pads-they are in a hallway by the bathroom. 3. They have this thing about peeing on throw rugs-I have wood floors, only rugs in the bathroom...if those little stinkers get the chance, they WILL go on the throw rug. BUT, it's very nice to know that they will be OK if we are not home to let them out right on schedule. Good luck in your decision! |
I first trained my pups to use the pee pads. Now I'm training the to go outside also... I'm at work all day so I trained them to use the pee pad for during the day when I'm not home and when weather is bad. I didn't want to expect them to have to hold it all day or for them to have to go outside if it's overly hot or cold. So now when I get home I pull up the pee pads and I'm training them to go outside. Their actally doing very well and now their not evern using the bathroom until I get home. But I still leave the pee pads down just in case they do need to go. Also another plus side is Lucy seems to have a small bladder b/c she always wakes up in the middle of the night and needs to use the bathroom, so instead of having to wake up in the middle of the night, I just put a pee pad in the kitchen and she'll use it and come back to bed. Oh yea, if you use pee pads don't put them on carpet. (unless you have to) b/c sometime they only hit half of the pad..LOL Good luck and WELCOME TO YT>.... If you have any other questions on this subject then feel free to Private message me Crystal |
I'm home most of the day, and since the weather is usually great in south texas, Schatzi is trained to go outside. I mostly steered away from puppy pads to avoid cleaning....but when it's raining I sometimes wish I had tried that. Schatzi seemed to prefer going outside, though. I TRIED training her on pads at first, but she chewed them up and prefered to sleep on them  So anyway, she goes outside. Good luck with whatever you (or your dog :D ) decide. |
I'm a teacher so I do have the rest of the summer to spend time training him to go outdoors. Is it possible to train them to go outside first and then train them to go on the pad? I have to go back to school at the end of August. Thankfully I have a ton of colleagues who also have dogs and everyone brings their dogs to the inservices before school starts! It's like a huge puppy play date! |
outside-housetrained |
Both of our little girls use puppy pads mostly because they were so tiny when we first got them, 8 oz. & 10 oz. Each arriving during the cold months made it hard to train them outsidebbecause I don't like to go outside in cold or rain/snow weather either. They will also go outside on occasion, they are less than 5 lbs. now mostly using the disposable puppy pads in home and in the travel trailer. The puppy pad method saved our girls from the UTI's they had of which wouldn't be spotted if they were trained outside to go. It would go unnoticed until the problem was worse if it weren't for the pads, besides they can be monitored for irregularities on the pad system. Our vet told us those puppy pads saved them from a very bad infection and lucky we caught it early. We use a baby " Diaper Genie " type container for easy disposals. Good luck ! |
