Retraining older Yorkies Hi all, First post here -- love the site! My dilemma is that my 5 1/2 year old male (Trevor) has started to pee/poo on an area rug the last few months. He had previously never had a problem housetraining. I have a doggy door installed that leads to the backyard and that has always worked well for Trevor, but for some reason the past few months he has had many accidents on this rug, mostly at night. He will never go on the rug when I am present, and when I discover the mistake he will start to quiver and be submissive because I believe he knows he did something bad. I have removed the rug and am waiting for a new one. I want to end this behavior before the new rug comes. I'm hoping that getting rid of the smell will stop this problem, but I'm not sure. I am looking for any suggestions on what I should do now and after the new rug comes to ensure that he goes back to his good ways. Thanks! |
First of all- Welcome to YT! I honestly don't think it's completely a training issue. Many times when dogs have health problems they lose control of their bladder and/or bowels. You may want to have him checked out by the vet, good luck fixing the problem! Let us know how it goes |
this is an interesting one, isn't it? Firstly, I agree with the last post-have him checked out for a medical problem. Otherwise,if it is happening at night, make sure he toilets before you go to bed.Take him out and praise. He may not want to go out by himself in the dark if he needs in the night.Do you have an outside light you can leave on for him? Restict his night time access to the 'rug' room. Let us know how he goes! |
