Training Treats Hi all, Our Howie is 14 weeks old and we just got him 2 weeks ago. I was wondering what treats everyone here uses to train their pups with. I want to make sure he doesn't get overfed! Thanks! |

henry likes zukes mini naturals.....all natural ingredients, and they are really tiny. www.zukes.com you can find them at health food stores, and higher end dog stores (not petsmart or petco) |
we use pedigree training treats. http://www.pedigree.com/dogproducts/...EE+TRAINER.asp |

it depends on how big your dog. for puppies and dogs in training you can use them as a treat. one cheerio for a sit or any thing you ask them to do. Throughout the day i would give a small handfull every couple hours between feedings to help keep sugar up and as a snack. Dogs really don't know how big the treat is your giving them. They only think 'hey i just got something good to eat.' so don't feel bad if your only giving your dog a couple cheerios, he won't know the difference really. |
It depends on what your training. For some things it's best to use soft treats so they don't have to "stop and chew" too long. For that we use cheese. I cut it up in such ridiculously tiny pieces, that she actually gets very little, even in an hour long training session (which some of our classes have been) Plus, when she's not in the mood, cheese is the only thing that gets her running agility. Also, if your dog has issues with wheat you'll want to stay away from the cheerios. |
my pup didn't eat the Cheerios when i tried. she dropped them on the floor and looked at me like, "You've got to be kidding, where's the good stuff?" LOL. we use the Zukes mini's, too. both my dogs LOVE those. we also have other tiny dog treats we found at a good pet store. peanut butter ones they like a lot, too. luckily we don't have to deal with any allergies.... omega |
only honey nut cheerios works for me |
Thanks everyone! I'm going to give the Cheerios a try today! |
Our pups like this...nutro training bits..super healthy smells good, just like human jerky, only thing, they 2x2 squares we have to cut into tiny bits but our pups will do anything for them....http://www.petco.com/Shop/Product.as...familyID=2522& I also use cheerios, although they do not love it as much and can sometimes spit it out |
milkbone I use the milkbone treats with the red filling. I first crush them up into tiny pieces though. ONE treat can last me a whole day of training! Because she only gets a little bit each time, she always wants more and always wants to do tricks! |
Gimborn Beef Liver Freeze Dried Training Treat for Dogs http://www.carealotpets.com/item-det...00000000001226 We break them up into smaller pieces, then we put them in a tin, & keep it by the back door. When I want Sammy to "come" or reward him for going potty, I just shake the tin (he knows the sound) & he comes running. We don't give him a treat every single time. We keep him guessing. I would say he gets a treat 80% of the time ;) You can get these at Petco, Petsmart, Care-A-Lot, maybe other places too. You can definately order online too. Seems kind of expensive, but we have had the same bucket for at least 4 months. Also he likes Vitakraft Deli Style Treats (Sirloin) also broken up into little pieces. http://www.carealotpets.com/item-detail/?ItemID=4234E |
Just wanted to add that the Gimborn Beef Liver Freeze Dried Training Treat for Dogs only has 1 Ingredient - 100% Beef Liver ... Smells nasty to me, but our dogs LOVE, LOVE, LOVE them!!! The Vitakraft Deli Style Treats (Sirloin) are a less healthy choice, but very yummy to our dogs. And fiinally beware of the Nutro stuff (it's not the healthiest either) |
