Help!!!!!! iI have had my yorkie since February and I have been working on the potty training. She does pretty good going outside if we are out but she still pees in her cage just about everytime I have her in their. I take her out very often. I have also taken away all her bedding but it seems to make no difference. Everytime I come home the cage stinks of pee.. Is their anything else i can do. At bedtime she stays in the cage with a towel and very rarely pees in it. I have been taking her out every 2 hours generally sometimes more.....   |
How big is the crate she is staying in?? The crate should only be big enough for her to stand up, turn around, and lay down. If her crate is bigger than this, you need to put a box or something solid like that in the back of the crate to make it smaller. As she grows, you can gradually increase the size of the crate. Yorkies will not go to the bathroom where they sleep. The crate is probably big enough for her to go potty in one corner and lay down and sleep in another corder. Try making the crate smaller (remember only big enough for her to stand up, turn around, and lay down) and let us know if that works. You can put a CLEAN towel in there with her once you make the crate small. You don't want her to be able to smell the pee on a dirty towel. Otherwise, it seems as if your doing everything else correctly! |
That makes since. The crate she keeps clean in my bedroom at night is smaller than the one in the kitchen. I just thought the larger one was nice for if I have to be gone away for a awhile shecan get up and move around alot more. Tomorrow I will move the smaller one to the kitchen during the day and see how it works. THANKS |
Let me know how it works!!! We had so much trouble with Hobbs going potty in his crate. We literally tried EVERYTHING. But, ever since we made his crate smaller, he hasn't gone a single time in his crate! So, I know it works. ;) |
I thought the crate for my puppy was small too but it turned out not small enough, so I had to stuff half the side with books. That eliminated many incidents of peeing and pooping. He did it in there a couple times, but only when he just couldn't plain hold it in. I felt guilty leaving him in such a small space, but I told myself it wouldn't be for too long. The crate is a wonderful tool to house break our puppies! |
Yep, I agree - the size of the crate is really important. I feel bad sometimes that Tinka doesn't have more room, but I know it's only for a while (hopefully!) and it really does help. omega |
Yes, please let me know if this worked for you. My yorkie is six months old and I've tried everything, with no success, to get him not to pee in his crate. I made the crate small by putting boxes in the back and he still peed! The only thing working right now is to put his small crate into a large wire crate (which is lined with peepads). This way, he pees in the larger area, but keeps his actual crate/bedding dry. I would ideally like to get rid of the second cage, but he just won't hold his pee the second I close that door!! Quote:

I have a related question... When I let Nina out of her crate and she actually goes in the right place, then what? How long do I let her run around or play? When is it time to go back in the crate? |

Yes...I completley agree. My little guy continued to go pee in his crate regardless of how cramped he got! He didn't care, he'd just pee, then lay down and sleep. The only thing that has worked so far is putting his smaller "bed" crate into a larger cage. He will come out of his small crate and pee in the larger one. I know this is not a true solution to the problem BUT it's the only thing that has worked. I only hope that as he gets older, he'll grow out of it and be able to hold his pee until we let him out. |
