House training

I'm new to this great forum. VERY informative ;)

Me and my girlfriend just got a 5 month old puppy (Angel) and she's so adorable.

As usual there's the house training problem. The breeder we got her from trained her to go pee on a pee pad pretty good. But when we got her home she would sometimes do it on the pad (it's in an x-pen with her bed, crate, food) or just beside it. Today we let her roam around in the kitchen and she pooped near a door way. We've started praising her when she does go on the pad too. We've also, tried to look at her body language/signs as to when she will do the deed but it's quite hard. And when she does start to squat we immediately say no but by then it's too late. She's a quick pee'er :D

Can anyone suggest some pointers/tips/advise for this?

p.s. We just got her this past Sat. Does she need some time to adjust? That is why this is happening?

Oops, forgot to also ask, what is a good product to use so Angel doesn't go pee in the same spot again? Something to remove the scent/odour.

I use Nature's Miracle. Lola still has the occasional accident. She was pretty well trained, but she regressed after her spay.

As a recent Yorkie friend, I am as clueless as you are in terms of potty training. Baby Mia and I are having similar problems. For cleaning I use Woolite's Pet Stain & Odor Remover. We recently lost one of our cats (because she had lymphoma), and she used to vomit a lot due to her illness. Woolite (for Pet Stains) worked better than Resolve (for Pet Stains) on vomit, but I guess either one of them would be effective for solving the "re-soiling the same spot" issue. Also, we will be renting a carpet washing vacuum cleaner at our grocery store to get rid of any residue. I wish you the best of luck.

just keep praising her when she goes in the right spot, when you see her
going in the wrong spot, say no, pick her up and put her on the pad..

Rather than waiting for her to have to go, you need to take her to the peepad every hour on the hour. You need to take her to the pee pad also, right after a nap, about 10-15 min after eating, and right after playing. (this is why it is very important to have a designated area that only is for potty and you take her to that area every time.) It should be partitioned off but have an open door so the puppy has access in to it. You should close it off, though when you lead her in so that she cannot leave the area until she has done her duty. Lead her to the area, don't carry her. (unless she is in the middle of doing it in the wrong place then scoop her up and let her finish up in the pee area) The reason you want her to go to the potty area on her own volition is so that she begins to learn when and where to go on her own. (You cannot expect her to know this at her age). You will leave her in the area until she goes potty. Make sure you repeat the Potty phrase while she is in there so she comes familiar with the term. After a few weeks, she will learn to automatically go when you lead her to this place, because she will have learned what is expected of her. If she absolutely will not go when you put her in there and about 15-20 min have gone by, you can take her out, but keep her penned and in your sites so she does not have an accident, and bring her back to the potty site again in about 10-15 minutes. Do this repeatitively until she finally goes in the potty area.

Puppies have to pee a lot and they are like kids, they are too busy with other things to think about where to go. The best way to house break a yorkie is to minimize the accident ratio. You need more sucessess than accidents, so you need to be very active in your parcipation in the house training. If she has accidents it is your fault because delayed timing on your behalf. As a matter of fact you are going to be more trained than she is in the begining. But after a time, she will get what is expected of her and she will begin to go automatically when she is in her potty area and eventually she will go on her own to the potty area. That is when you know she is on her way to being housebroken.

Angel has gotten pretty good at pee'ing on the pad now. I would say 9/10 she is "spot on" :D

But the poo'ing is another story. See this thread Trailing Poop What are your thoughts about this?? DJ30 said she had another accident last night where some of it was on the pad and the rest on the tarp lined floor.

For the stains and smell, I just discovered "Get Serious". You get it at PetSmart. It has worked wonders for me.
