Toilet Training Problems I have two Yorkie boys aged 8 months. When I had my first Yorkie my Mum worked from home and so through taking him out every hour when we first got him, he got trained to go to the toilet outside and before he was 1 he would run to the the back door to tell us when he wanted to go out. We tried this same routine with our new boys but the problem is no one is at home full time and although they are never alone for more than a few hours, we do shift work which means one week they'll go out regularly in the monring and the next they will got regularly in the afternoons! Clearly they have no toilet routine and although they go to the toilet outside when taken, they have loads of accidents inside. It's getting to the point where our house is starting to smell because of their accidents and I don't know what to do next. We don't seem to have litter tray training in the UK as much as you guys do in the US. I'm willing to perservere of course but no one is with them 24 hours a day which I know will make things hard. I love these guys so much and this is the only thing which spoils our happy lives together. |
The only thing I can suggest is to crate them when you are not home. They will not be in their crates for long amounts of time and should be just fine. Or, if you have linolium floors in your kitchen, confine them to that area. Personally, though, I would crate them. |
I say crate them while you are away too, I'm sure it wouldn't have to be a forever thing, just until they learn. When you are home and they are roaming free, you might want to try belly bands. They are a life (home) saver! |
Firstly, steam clean the carpets to take away the scent. You can borrow a machine form the supermarkets here and it does a good job. Then when you are not at home confine them in one area eg the kitchen. Use a baby gate, x-pen or you could use a crate. i wouldn't crate for longer than 3 hours during the day though. Then continue to take out for toileting and use your toilet phrase. Don't let them back in until they have gone. It might mean standing out in the rain etc. or at 6 in the morning, but success will build on success and soon they won't consider going inside unless signals aren't noticed. To start with take them out often, like a little puppy. Praise, praise! Make sure they have enough exercise-at least one good walk a day and lots of fetch etc. This is now working with my 7 1/2 month old, when I too was on despair about 4 weeks ago.She suddenly seems to have 'got' it. You could try belly bands when free in the house-i have a girl so have no experience with these. I wouldn't switch to inside toileting now-too confusing. Good luck! |
