crate training an older dog My daughters Chi is 1 1/2 years old and hasn't been crate trained. Is there any hope of training him now? Could you give me some suggestions? Thanks!! |
How long have you had him? What are the reasons for putting him in a crate? The only suggestion I can make is have the crate open while you're at home. That way he can go in out of the crate when he wants too. I have blanket and some toys in there for him to be comfortable. By having access to go in and out of the crate when he likes he should start to feel more comfortable being closed up when you have to leave. I hope that help. |

Slowly adjust him to the crate. Don't rush it. Alway reward him in the crate and not when he comes out of the crate. |
We went out of town this weekend and he was a wreck in the hotel room, he could not get comfortable, we were thinking if we could get him used to a crate that when we went out of town again he would have a security spot. On the good side, my yorkie, Pita, did great, she's happy wherever we are. We also took her crate and I think that helped. My daughter didn't get the chi until he was 5 months old and he had been with a man in a wheel chair since he was 8 weeks old and the habits he had from there were atrocious! The crate has never really been an issue but she would like to travel with him and thought that would make him feel more secure. He's really smart and outgoing not usually timid, but he had some insecurities when she first got him, he used to do alot of the submissive peeing and now he hardly does it all. But in public he's really nervous. any suggestions? |
I think the crate is a great idea. I know you know how to crate train a dog because Pita is crate trained. Not all dogs take to the crate really quickly. Give him lot so reward and praises and I'm sure he will get it sooner or later. It sound like the chi is coming along quite nicely. Glad to hear he is not submissive peeing as much as he used to. I'm sure he will slowly adjust to the public as well. Honestly, I think your daughter is doing a good job. I might just be the matter of a little more patience and time. Some small dog just takes a little bit longer to get use to thing. Good luck and keep us posted on her chi as well as Pita. |
