Introducing puppy to our dogs Hi everyone :) I will be getting my yorkie in Sept. hopefully and I just picked up Yorkshire Terriers for Dummies for some further info. One of the things it talks about considering is if you have a big dog, not getting a yorkie. Well we have a med. sized dog (heinz 57) and a smaller dog, but they are both outside dogs, so I don't think this is an issue right? My question is...do you still introduce them and just watch even if they are not necessarily going to be in the same living space? We do usually bring in our dogs to our back porch at nights but they are gated off. Thanks, V |

Big Dog Intro Suceeded From Experience.....but mine may not be like yours. Treat them as if they were your baby. My first Yorkie puppy, years ago, was introduced to our 100+ lb mix breed while the big dog was commanded to stay and lay down. That gave the Yorkie the advantage. Tried it again this week with our newest Yorkie and the big dog acted good again. But, I have another big 80 lb mix, much younger and playful who doesn't like the lay down and stay command. Anyway, he did lay down but got spooked by the puppy and took off. Since then the Yorkie puppy's only interaction is usually done via looking at them thru a fence. She hugs my ankles, so to speak. Also, I'm careful to not let the older male Yorkie (BooBoo) out with her when either of the big dogs are out. He likes to attack them for fun but with her in the mix it may turn into real trouble. |
