15 minutes, 10 turkey treats, one happy mom! Last night I decided I was going to start teaching Chloe things like "sit", "stay", "lay down", "roll over", and so on. I decided an important one to start with was "sit". I went into this thinking it would take 15 minutes for a few days to get her to know what to do... boy was I wrong! I only spent 15 minutes with her, used a total of ten tiny cut up cubes of organic turkey and she got it! I am so proud of her! Everyone was telling me she was too young to train (12 weeks), but she sure showed them wrong!! I can't remember who it was on this forum, but they suggested using hand signals too, and that was great advise! I think it really helped! Haha only thing is now sometimes when I look down at her she'll sit:D !!! Haha she wants more turkey! She still is figuring out it's only when i ask her:) I'm sorry I can't remember who it was, but thank you for the inspiration with the hand signals to start training Chloe!!! |

Yay for Chloe, and yes they learn very quickly. The sitting without your command always tickles me....look, momma, I'm doing it, I'm sitting....now where's my treat? |

HAHAHA Sadie does that with roll over. Once she figured that one out, she'll roll over any time she wants a treat. I'll have a treat in my hand and I might pause (usually because I'm trying to decide which trick I'd like her to do...I don't ask for the same one all the time) and if I take to long, she'll just roll over. Like :aimeeyork "OK I did something & you KNOW it was cute, can I have it now?":aimeeyork |

My pup did the same thing. I had a handful of treats and had him sit to get one......which he readily did -- but, he wouldn't get up again until all the treats were gone. He just stayed sitting there..... He learned that "sitting and treats" go together very quickly. Carol Jean |

What tickles me is when you are trying to teach one to sit, and you say "sit" and wait for them to do it, holding the treat in your hand .... and then you look around you to the others who are all sitting there pretty as you please with that expectant look on their faces. "Look Ma, I'm sitting....where's MY treat?" I think some of them learn by watching when we don't even realize it!!! |

This is how I learned it.... Start with sit Then move on to "down" Once they have gotten this down, you can start teaching roll over Take the treat, put it in front of them so they know you have it, then move it around the body, over the shoulder. The dog will try to follow it with their head and once their head goes so far, they will automatically roll over. Continue to say "roll over" as you are doing this. It took Sadie a while, but she caught on & now I can't stop her from rolling! |
