what are the best time for taking dogs out to pee? and should i take a little piece of the wee wee pad to the street to help him?? |
I would say the morning is the best and then frequently throughout the day, like after meals, and again before you go to bed. I wouldn’t take the pee-pad out there unless he’s already trained to the pad and your trying to switch to the outdoors. |
I started Gus on pee pads when he was little but after he was done with all his shots I started to take him out about every 2 hours or so. After a while he didn't want to use the pads anymore and would cry to go potty outside. But every dog is different, some easier and some harder. My Pom was a nightmare to train but Gus was so easy. Find what works best for youy baby. Good luck to you. |
since i only had agapito for 5 days LOL i think he is doing quite good (well, sort of) see, he has been going to the wee wee pad most time to pee, but not to poo... so he leaves presents everywhere. but at least he is peeing in the pad, only 2 times he has forgotten. :D so this morning for the first time i took him out at 8 am for a 20 minute walk, he didnt seem to be smelling other dogs pee or interested in doing it.... so i got him back home and what was the first time he did? yes, he went to the wee wee pad.. i hope i am not sending him mixed signals??? i am going to try to do the walk and leave the wee wee for emergencies... i am getting a trainer to help me starting next week because this dog only comes when he wants to :thumbdown |
Welcome to Yorkietalk, How old is your puppy? It takes time and lots of praise for them to learn what you want. Do you use a potty command? when he wees on the pad say something like-potty,good potty or toilet, good toilet.then when you are out you can use the same phrase! I use toilet, go toilet. He will eventually associate the action with the command. Are you using lots of treats and praise to reinforce 'Come' ? Don't call him for something negative, but go get him instead. It has only been five days! you are both doing so well. Enjoy! |

I would say morning, after playing, after naps and just anytime that they seem to be looking for a place to go to the bathroom. I'm not sure about the pee pads because, I'm fortunate enough that I don't have to use them. We have a hughe fenced in back yard and a doggie door which is wonderful. We have had the door up since Feb and Wyatt is now 10 months old and he has only pooped in the house twice and both times it was while I was gone and he couldn't get out. He hasn't peed anywhere(yet). Good Luck |
I know mornings are a must for my guys. After that, you have to watch them. I agree with sandaj that it's nice to have a word. When they go outside, give them lots of praise and treats and say "Good Pee" or whatever. Eventually, you'll be able to let them out and say "Go Pee" or "Go Potty," and they'll understand. At least that's the theory. Good luck. |
thank you so much! yes i will use the word potty from now on. at lunch i took him out shopping (gosh he is so small i just walk in everwhere and by the time they realize i have a dog is too late for them to kick me out! is perfect... i am not supposed to walk in with dogs anywhere in london but i put him in a bag with his head sticking out and no one can resist!! LOL even the security guard just told me "just put a sweater over him and it will be ok! LOL :D so i walked him for about 15 minutes and he pooped!!! yes is a miracle! he pooped and i said Good a lot. then we got home and he went to the wee wee pad to pee.... i am so proud of him he is starting to be less embarassed about going iin front of me:animal36 |

Any words will work, though. Use whatever you feel comfortable with. |
I didn't read all the responses, so if this was already said, sorry for wasting your time.. but what I did and others have done.. is first thing in the morning, pee and poo... then I take Cash out every 3-4 hours, between 6-7 he'll poo again.. then I take him out before we go to bed... works for us... |
