6mo old wants to go outside 30 x a day. Help? Hi, I am pretty new to the boards and I have had my boy since he was about 10 weeks. He is now 6 months old (weighs 9lbs btw). He wants to go outside constantly. He doesn't stay out there but a couple of minutes, but as soon as he comes back in, its back to the door to go out again. I am tired! The couple of times I have ignored him he went to the bathroom on the floor. I tried just leaving him outside when he wants to come back in (just ignored him while he barked outside the door), but that didn't work because the door is too close to where we are & I can't take the barking so the most I could do is about 7-10 minutes. This has not worked. When will this stop? When/if I get him neutered will that make him stop? Thanks for your help. I read lots of good stuff on these boards. |

If you can install a doggie door. Mine where doing the same to me. Driving me absolutely crazy. Now they come and go as they please. Most definitely a god send. I love it. I will never be without one again. |
Neutering might help |

When he goes outside do you watch him to see if he actually goes to the bathroom?? |
I peak at him. He doesn't go to the bathroom most of the time he is out there by himself. He is just playing, trying to catch ducks, bunnys, birds, chew on mulch, sticks, rocks (he is VERY curious). But if I go out with him he usually will go on comand (sort of). I think he prefers that I be out there with him, but I don't want him to be this way. I want him trained to go out by himself. There is no reason not to. We have a safe tall fenced in yard, locked from the inside & no holes in the fence for escape. I am really, really tired of this game!! Our other dog only goes outside about 3 times a day. I am not sure if the "doggie door" is affordable, but I will look into it. |
Dog doors are the greatest Quote:

my little guy likes to go out all day long too. if you rule out a uti or or health problem they are just curious and get bored inside. romeo is on a schedule. he knows exactly when he goes out. a schedule helps big time. becareful letting him outside alone. he could be stolen or killed by an owl or hawk. we went out leisurely for 2 years and on day an owl came down and almost got him. i ran and got to him first and the owl continued to chase both of us. a very scary day i will never forget. |
the doggie door sounds like a good idea-you can get them similar to cat doors for glass or wooden doors. They are much the same price. Otherwise,if he isn't really needing to wee,he may be bored and looking for something to do.Does he do this after a good walk? Or,if the weather is good and you are home, you might want to leave your outside dor ajar-in Summer I had my glass sliding doors to the deck and yard open constantly if we were at home. |
I have a 6month old that loves to play outside too! Usually I will go out with him. And watch if he goes potty. If you know he went potty and he goes right back out to the door I usally give Chance one more time because sometime he gets distracted very easily and does not empty his bladder completely or he has to poo. Okay we come back in...if he goes to the door again within an hour I either one distract him with a toy or something to chew on or give myself a break and put him in his kennel for a while. He does not go to the door as much if I give him entertainment in the house. |
