Bitting Badly I am really concerned because Mocha is getting into the bad habit of biting EVERYTHING.. She literally draws blodd when she bites me and I am concerned.. Saying "NO" and holding her mouth closed doesnt seem to help.. Its like she thinks I'm playing with her.. Its driving me CRAZY and I feel like she will never learn.. Also her potty training is going badly too.. What are we doing wrong?? :thumbdown |
Have you tried giving her a chew toy whenever she tries to bite? I keep a nylabone or greenie in my pocket and if Tia starts to bite at my hands or the furniture, I devert her attention to the chew toy. As to the potty training, I'm horrible at it. Tia is not doing well AT ALL. I spoil her too much, which I KNOW is my problem. I need to just buckle down and get strict. I'll watch this for advice on potty training. |
Is she biting because she is mad or is she just teething on you? |
I agree with what Aimee said on chewing and here's what I did for potty training -- not that Stewie is 100% or anything, but he's about 80% on bad days. I guess the most important thing is to praise constantly if they go on their pad or come close to going on it (front paws on, back off). I also give a small trainer treat. He sometimes just goes less than a teaspoon if he wants a treat. He first makes sure I'm looking. Does Mocha or Tia have accidents in the same place? Well, move their pee pad to wherever they like to go. Stewie kept going behind this chair over and over even though I cleaned it very well. Finally, I moved his pee pad there. After he was going on the pee pad behind the chair, I moved it to where I wanted it (in a discreet corner) He goes on it consistently with a couple exceptions. #2 is another story. He poos next to the pad 20% of the time or so. This may be controversial, but if I catch Stewie in the act of peeing where's he's not supposed to, I firmly tap him on the nose and tell him "No. Make potty on your pad" and place him on the pad. If he's sniffing around, I keep repeating myself and if he's not listening, I race over there and pick him up and put him on it. When we go outside and I want him to go I keep telling him to "make potty" I realize that no one can watch their dog 24/7, but if show him the pad and put him/her on it a million times a day and they assoicate a word like "make potty" with actually going, then I think you will have some luck. It took a long time for me. I got Stewie @ 16 weeks and he's almost 6 mos old now and just becoming reliable with going where he's supposed to go. To be blunt, it sucks. He never lets me know he has to go besides sniffing around. I don't think I will ever be able to teach him to go outside now that he's been going inside. |

So that she knows that you are serious about not playing so rough and biting so hard, maybe you should try a squirt gun. I have not done this myself but have heard others that use a squirt gun on behavior they want to stop. It would atleast suprise her and give you enough time to say no. If she still didn't stop, maybe the next step would be a short time out. My Tinkerbell can get a little nippy when excited to. It seems to gradually be getting better. If she doesn't listen I totally ignore her and won't play with her at all until she is calm. Just an idea on potty training, maybe you could make her area a little smaller during the day so that she HAS to hit the pad when she has to go. Also are you taking her outside on a leash or is she just able to roam around and smell the flowers and not be too focused on the job at hand? If not you might want to try that. And then when she does go pee then let her off the leash to have some play time outside. I use an outside pen with mine, we would go in there and I would tell her to potty. And I wouldn't let her out until she would go, then I would let her out and let her play and snoop around a while. Now if she's doddling around outside and I want her to hurry up I put her in her pen and she goes immediately. Hope things get better soon! Don't get discouraged yet. |
My Jack is almost 6 months old. He will go on the pee pad at home, but does number 2 mostly in the bathroom (I guess he thinks whats good for the gander). I have him at my store during the day and he sniffs around to let me know he has to go, so I take him outside and he is fine. I don't know what the difference is between home and store, I guess he feels more comfortable at home. Jack bites too, he is just playing, but it does hurt. I give him a toy whenever he does it, but then he thinks I want to play catch. He won't let go of the toy to let me throw it, and that is when I get the most nips. My vet said to put some tobasco sauce on the tip of my finger when he does it, but I can't bring myself to do that. Has anyone else heard of that? |
Thanks for all of the wonderful advice.. Mocha had a good weekend.. Didn't bite at my face at all.. Just my pants and my feet.. She went pee and poop 2 times on the paper and 1 time on the leash outside today.. I am so proud of her.. She got lots a hugs, kisses, and praises |

Yeah, I did the tobasco thing the Lil Bear when she was a puppy, cause bitter apple did nothing. So I bought a bottle of good Louisianna hot sauce (I lived there when I was young so I know the hot stuff) and put it on my hands and the wood in the house she would chew on.....well Lil Bear thought it was the best tasteing stuff since welll...the bitter apple and would lap it up and come to me for more. So hopefully Jack doesn't have a taste for hot sauce. Moose is 3 months and is bitting me too. But I will stray bitter apple on me and she will stop. I have tried the tug on the neck like momma dog and say no but she thinks I'm playing and will bite more. I have also tried the give her a chewie, but she just hits it out of the way and goes for my foot. |
Biting Badly Now I know that someone else has tried the tobasco thingt, I may have a go. Knowing Jack though he will probably like it too. His biting is getting softer, so I know he is not trying to hurt me. Thank you all for your advise, Jack and Jill |
My problem is everyone else thinks it's cute. They let Asia chew on their hands when she is playing. (not drawing blood yet). I keep getting on to her for biting me, but they are not helping. They say "Oh she's just teething". |
I too, use to have a biter,, I was constantly saying "No Biting!!" and be serious when ya say it and Eye contact! Sometimes I would sit on my hands to keep him from biting,, his was all in play. But it worked,, and I had alot of chew toys, sticks, etc,, but now sometimes he'll be all wound up and start and right away " NO BITING" and the hands dissapear,, and he gets the point! |
Bitting badly My Jack who will be 6 months old this week used to bite all the time, now it is his "play". The sitting on the hands works for us sometimes. My husband and I have both had numerous bites when we are throwing a toy, he brings it back, but when we go to pick it up he jumps at it, and that is when we get hurt, mainly from jerking away. We then stop playing with him until he gets the message. Oh I am proud to say that he just pawed at my gate that keeps him behind my counter at the shop. I took him outside and he did his business. I must say that he really got a good treat when we came back in. |
Try putting a few pennies in an empty soup can, cover the can with saran wrap or fabric and use a rubber band to secure it. Whenever your puppy bites or is not behaving shake the can. It seems to be working for my puppy who also likes to bite my hands. Good luck and I hope this helps! :) |
