Sometimes I think this is just something the dog does, or it doesn't. Bristol has never strayed, sits on the deck, or lays close to me as I garden, but he doesn't leave. Even when he sees other dogs. Never really trained him, it's just his way. Now Selby will stay as long as I am close enough to block her. She will leave in a heartbeat. I like her with me, so I will use a tie out. Maybe she will eventually learn, but this little 4lb girl who is afraid of noises, and sometimes sudden movements, will scamper of to the wild unknown of the park across the street with no hesitation. The main worry I would have if you weren't out with them, even for just a minute or two, is what other dog could come into your yard and hurt them, even before you have a chance of getting them to safety.:animal-pa |
I've had my Yorkie for seven years now and not until this year could we trust him outside without a rope by himself. First, many factors come into play. He listens when he knows when he is in trouble. If he takes after a rabit, he'll case it, but if we yell at him and he knows we know we mean it, he'll turn around and come back. However, when we do let him go outside without a rope we always keep an eye on him from the inside. The second thing is this was never possible until after our other dog died last summer. Bosco, the yorkie, always felt the need to chase and explore when Duke, the other dog, was around. So, if you have other dogs, or dogs in the neighborhood it might not be possible. A lot of factors come into to play and you know your dog best, you'll know when he can start to be trusted. |
