Cage Training Question I know that yorkies hate their cages at first and begin loving it....my yorkie is starting to not cry in hers at night, and she is doing very good in it....however there is one little problem.....she has been soiling her towel...i thought that they wouldn't use the bathroom where they sleep....i dont know how to break her of it....any feedback would be great!!!! They won't, unless they can't hold it. If she can't make it through the night, then you need to set an alarm and take her out in the middle of the night. I took Loki out twice a night until he was around 4 months old, then at 2am until he was about 6 months old. Also, Yorkies are smart. Loki would pee on his blanket and then push it under the divider in the crate so he didn't have to sit on it. We ended up taking away his blanket until he was older. Also, don't rely on the 1 hour per month old rule. Yorkies are too small for this to work. Loki would hold it (awake) for about 30 mins until he was 4 months old. Then an hour, and eventually 2 or 3 hours until he was like 10 months old. I couldn't leave him in there more than 3 hours or he'd pee in his crate. Now he can go 5 hours if absolutely necessary, but I limit trips to 4 hours. He's 1 1/2 now. |

To crate train they only need enough room to lay down comfortably. They won't use the bathroom where they have to lay. With Reuger I ended up filling the back of his crate with boxes to make sure that he had the right amount of room. And, voila, he quit peeing and pooping in the crate! For Christmas we bought him a much larger cage and we had to use the divider to make it much smaller, again he only had room to lay down. As he got better we started making the cage larger and now, at almost a year, he has his whole cage and never has an accident in it. Also, don't put a blanket or towel in with him. |
Crate Training Why do you suggest not to put a towel or blanket in with them? Quote:
