Ears wont go up! HELP! Hey Guys, Napoleon is 13 weeks old and his ears arent up yet. are they supposed to be? Or does it take longer than 13 weeks. I have seen pics up on yt of puppies that are 9 weeks and theyr ears are up! why aren't Napoleon's up yet?! I mean he is a bit of a fatty these days, so maybe his ears are weighing down? I don't know what to do! |
Buzz the hair off of the top 1/3 of the outside of the ear. I almost guarantee that the little one's ears will be up by tomorrow afternoon! :) I just did this with a couple of my puppies that had heavy ears and it worked like magic! |
you can try taping his ears |
I had a thread going on this somewhere..... I'm dealing with the same thing and my Tinka is 5 months. Her ears have been shaved at least 4 times and have been taped many, many times since the tape doesn't stay on well - especially when she wrestles with her "sister." I have taken her back to the breeder, too, for taping and to show me how to do it. Someone here said that if they are teething, sometimes the ears can go back down... I'm frustrated too. Now when I put the tape on, the ears fall over instead of standing up and I am doing it the same way as before, so maybe there is something to the teething thing. I'm thinking of calling the vet tomorrow and seeing if there is anything else that can be done. I REALLY want her ears to stand up! That is the standard for Yorkies and that is what I want. (whine...) omega |
OMG me too!! I just want my puppy to look like all the other adorable yorkies on this website. Don't get me wrong, I love him to death! but he is already overweight (3 months and weighing in at 6.4 lbs) so the least he can do for me is get his ears up) |
I talked to the vets office today and they said they've never heard of the teething/ear problem. They said to keep taping it and to try something stiffer, like popsicle sticks (small) wrapped in gauze and then tape them to the ears.... I have taped Tinka's 3 times already today. I'm getting really tired of it.. omega |

I gave up on my dog's ears. I taped em and the groomer shaved the hair off em, but they still didn't go up. He totally hated the tape on his ears. All he would do was rub his face on the carpet trying to get it off. So I said that it didnt matter. Trust me, I was obsessed with having em up as well. My yorkie is a bigger one weighing in at 10 lbs.So I wanted to make up for it with at least his ears going up. And he looks adorable when he's laying down and his ears stick up. But it wasnt worth having him miserable to keep them that way. Hope this helps somewhat. |
Some ears never go up but they are all still young. Post pics so we can get a better idea. Usually when I get a puppy now I want the ears up, I know they may go up and down but I at least want to know they can go up. After my first Yorkie who's ears never went up I got puppies who's ears are up and all three of them never had their ears go down. Hopefully they will go up but do keep the hair off of them. |
Yea same with me. My next puppy will have her ears up when I pick her out. I don't want to be let down again. the breeder I got mine from told me they would go up. But oh well, I still love him. |
I am having the same issue with my 5month Yorkie Napoleon. I'm getting anxious because people are saying 6month is the point of no return. I know I will love him regardless of what he looks like, but I would really really like his ears to stand up so he looks like your standard Yorkie. He is probably about 5lbs now. I have tried shaving, taping, and so on. His ears are VERY floppy now. |
2 Attachment(s) I fussed. I fussed A LOT! I drove my boyfriend crazy with all the taping and researching on the internet. I was so excited when he was a pup and his ears started standing.... but then they flopped. I was sooo sad. I brought him to the groomer and had them buzz some hair off the top of the ear. I almost kicked myself too because I realized i LOVE his floppy ears. I was tempted to tape them DOWN (:D :D :p ) Needless to say, they are too large to stand up and I wouldn't have it ANY OTHER WAY! (Don't get me wrong- I love the ears up on the small little babies, but he's getting to be a big boy- I estimate around 6ish pounds- and looks perfect with the ears down) (first pic of them up and at about 7 weeks and the last pic is him as of yesterday with the floppy ears!) But goodluck in your conquest to get the ears up- I just thought I'd share the flip side of the ear theory |
Baxter has one up and one down. Been that way for awhile. But I don't worry about it anymore. Makes him kind of unique. |
I feel for all of you... Keeley's ears were the bain of my existance for awhile. It was tape and shave, shave and tape. I noticed the biggest difference when I would shave the whole ear... Up and down, inside and out. I taped and taped but would only see a difference for a day or two... Then when he turned 6 months I heard it was the deadline, and I stopped the taping. Then I heard that cottage cheese helped ( I don;t know why?) But I gave him some, and a little after that I noticed that they would stand up. At one, now his ears poke 1/2 the time and flop the other. Especially if I keep them shaved. It is weird. Good luck!! The best way I found to shave is to wrap them (the yorkie) tightly in a towel, and then if you have someone there to help, have them give them some peanut butter to distract them. After the first few times, when they are a little more used to the noise and vibration, you can drop the PB and just wrap them tightly in a towel. Hope that helps. |
Yep, use clippers and shave those buggers from where they join the head to the tip both inside and out! If anything will work, that, and taping after the shaving, will do it. There are some sites on the internet that show the most effective ways to tape the ears up. If there are more than one dog, you can almost forget it. The others just pull them around by the tape. And, I hope you do not misunderstand this statement, but "vets are not the best source of advice when it comes to breeder type issues such as the ears going down when the Yorkie is stressed, sick, teething, etc. IT IS A FACT that it happens. Ask any breeder.... Some ears just never stand and there are all kinds of reason given. I have no idea why....massaging the entire ear from base to tip at least daily has helped on occasion... |
