Potty Pads and Outside Hi All, Our 9 month female baby is 100% potty pad trained and has been for a few months. Now I'm trying to figure out how to also train her to go outside without totally confusing her! Or should I just forget it and resign myself to a lifetime of potty pads??:confused: Thanks! |
I also aim for my babies to do both . . I guess it is doable but diligence (which I don't have time right now) and patience is required . . good luck! |

Cali is 100% potty trained and Iwill take her on a nice long walk with my other dog who is only trained outside and Cali waits till we get home and uses her pee pad. I had thought that she would just take to going outside like Maya but she doesn't. |
I asked my vet about this once and he said that once they are trained to the pee pads then start moving itcloser to the door you want them going out. Just moving a little at a time then when you get to the door put part of the pad under the door until there isnt' enough to go on then she'll be looking for the pad and let you know she needs it. You may have to use the pad outside a until she gets the idea down. worked with my mastiff and basset hound but my yorkie is still working on not napping on the pee pads. :( |
I agree with using the "potty" command. My two older dogs are both trained to go on command, (if they have any in them LOL). AprilLove is 17 weeks old and she now knows the command. I just kept repeating "go potty" whenever she uses the piddle pads.( and still do) She is about 95% reliable inside. I have started using the command outside in the last week and she does it. It has not seemed to confuse her, as she still goes to the litter box/pads inside. In my opinion it is well worth it to have them trained this way. With my older dogs (both outside trained), it works great when we go places and before they go inside anothers house or wherever, I give the command and they piddle away!!! i'm curious tho, given that your puppy is 100% potty pad trained, what happens when you don't leave a potty pad down? if there's no potty pads around in the house? will she just pee where the potty pad should be? i leave the potty pad in the same spot at home. if the potty pad is not present, the puppy will just pee where it should have been. he won't hold it until i put one down. |
Potty Pads and Outside Thanks so much for the information about using the "Go Potty" command! We are training "Taylor" on piddle pads, he is 14 weeks old and doing real well. When we take him outside he has pottied but mostly will wait until we are back inside with his pads. I don't mind if he only uses pads but there are so many advantages to having them be able to do both at times.
