Housetraining problems Hi, all! I'm a first-time Yorkie owner and new to this site; it's my first post. I've had other dogs in the past, toy poodles, Sheltie, and don't know if it's fair to compare them to a Yorkie. Pilla (pronounced Pee-ya, Spanish for Rascal) is almost 5 months old, and we've had her about 6 weeks. We decided to litter train her rather than take her outside. She absolutely knows what the litter pan is for, because if I catch her in the act and tell her to "go get in the pan", she runs right into it. But if she's left to run around on her own, she'll poop and pee wherever she pleases. We'll show her the mess, tell her, "no, that's bad" in a stern voice, bring her to the pan and say, "you go in your pan". Another part of the problem is that sometimes she'll pee just outside of the pan. It looks like she might have her front legs inside the pan and leaves the back end out and just pees! Does that mean the pan is too small for her? Geez, she's only 2-1/2 lbs! It's getting really frustrating. I don't remember it taking this long in the past with my other dogs to train them. Do Yorkies just take longer? Am I missing something? HELP.........anybody? |
Well, I am by no means an expert as I have two that are quite testing in this area. But, other have advised that Yorkies can take much longer than 5 months to be completely house broke - And, some never get totally trained. I'd say just keep to the routine and give things a little more time. GOOD LUCK and WELCOME TO YT! :aimeeyork |
My baby is 5 months old as well and about the same size. She has been doing rather well lately. We are training her to be an outside "potty girl" but she has potty pad access if we can't get her to the great outdoors in time. She has the hang of the "tee tee" part. Pooping on the other hand, she only hits the general area, but at least she doesn't leave her "trail" all over the house. My neighbor's Yorkie took 1 1/2 years to finally complete her potty training. Just be patient is all I can say. Maybe since your baby is so tiny she can't get all the way up in her box??? |
