Too many treats??? Is there a limit as to how many treats per day to give your furbaby (5 mos - 7.5 lbs)? We're doing various training (potty training, sit/stay, crate training) with Kody, and give him a small treat when he does what he's asked to do. The treats we give him are training treats, so they are pretty small to begin with. But I also cut them in half just to be sure I'm not giving him too much. I'm afraid to give him too many, to the point he doesn't want his regular food. All together, we probably give him anywhere between 10 - 15 "half" treats throughout the day. Any thoughts/suggestions? Thanks! |
That is not to many. As long as he is still eating his usually amount of food it is ok. Good luck. |
You might see if Kody will "work" for bits of his dried food. For big things like "come" or pottying correctly when we were working on that, Joey always gets good treats, but he's perfectly happy to work for kibble on the lesser important stuff. |
For sure - little Yorkies won't be hungry at meal time -- if they get treats all day. These "little bites" add up to a lot of food. So - start using healthy food for treats (and not "dog treats"). I use small pieces of chicken, other meats, occasionally cheese, etc. These are healthy foods for our dogs, and I can just consider these treats as part of their good and healthy food for the day. Then, if they eat less of their dog food, I don't worry about it. I'm sure you can be creative and think of many healthy foods you can use for treats - rather than "dog treats - which I call "junk food." Carol Jean |
Just make sure you are using good quality treats, not puperoni or really anything you can buy at petsmart. We use itty bitty buddy biscuits broken in like 4 pieces, bits of kibble, chicken, banana (only once a day, practicing recalls), and I just found some new stinky one called "zukes" mini naturals. Just keep an eye on your dog's weight. And by weight, I really mean how he looks - Loki is a healthy 9-10 pounds, even though he's "big" he's not fat. Loki is very food motivated and will eat too much if I let him. He finishes his dinner if I give him 1/8 or 1/2 a cup, even if it's a training class night. |
