Jumping on people Kirby has one bad habit that I would like to curb, he tends to jump on people when he gets excited. Some non-dog people don't find this beahvior 'cute' and I have to admit that I would rather he didn't do it. He does it to me too but responds to 'down' and holding the palm of my hand out at him. I don't encourage the behavior but there are times when I respond to it and will play with him or pick him up so I know this is reinforcing the behavior so I need to stop this, so assuming that I stop doing that what is good way to teach him not to jump on people? Things I've read include, stepping on their hind feet, kneeing them in the chest (large breeds) etc... those are methods that I'm not comfortable using with Kirby any other non-painful methods? |
Dog Whisperer method. Wait til the dog is calm before you look at him, talk to him, or pet him. Use your hand as a dogs mouth and nip at his shoulder as the top dog would do if a lower dog invaded his space without being invited in. Make a noise, any noise you choose, when you do this, so eventually you will be able to control him when he is out of reach. Try ignoring first and use the bite only if he doesn't back off. good luck Let us know if you use this method and if it works. Wow, great method and great website, lot's of good info there. I've always liked Cesar's methods, I really need to buy his book! Thanks! I'll let you know how this goes. |

we simply tell Tinka "OFF!" and move our leg so she isn't on it anymore. she is learning - she's almost 5 months, so we're working on a lot of training things!! omega :aimeeyork |
We also taught Loki "off" no pinching needed. Throw a treat on the floor and the second all 4 paws hit the floor you say "OFF" Yorkies are smart and pick this up in a few tries. Don't put so much faith in Cesar Milan's methods - there is no need to pinch your dog. You can also turn your back and ignore the dog until he is sitting nicely. Or, you can ask for what's called an incompatible behavior like a down/stay. Here is a link to a fabulous article by Pat Miller. I love her book Positive Perspectives.
