sir hump a lot today romeo had a male puppy friend over for the first time and he would not stop trying to hump him for several hours. i would pull him off and say stop and no. then he would go right back. he is not neutered because i was going to stud him but he has a genetic defect. a neuter now won't stop the behavior. what should i do??? |
I know that most of the time yorkies, males & females, hump to show dominance over another dog. So, if another male dog came to visit YOUR house, then your dog is probably humping him because he wanted to show the other dog that he was the dominant one. Also, Hobbs was a humper before we got him neutered. After he got neutered, he has not tried to hump a single time. The vet told me that this behaviour can absolutely be reversed when neutered. GOOD LUCK! |
Neutering now can still help prevent this behavior, as RLC says. If you choose not to neuter, then everytime you see him hump, give him a stern NO! and stop him to discourage this behavior. |
i'm really confused. my vet said the humping won't stop after a neuter because he's too old. (3 yrs old) i gave him a very stern stop and pulled him away. he even had a 1 hour time out in the house. my fiance' says i need to give him a light smack on his bottom. i don't believe in smacking animals or people. it breaks their spirit. romeo is very stubborn. help. |
I had a yorkie that was SO stubborn. We used an empty paper towel roll to tap on her bottom when the stern "NO" wouldn't work. It doesnt hurt them at all, it just makes a loud sound to scold them. Maybe that would help. |
Try spraying with a water bottle. It stops my 3year old cat from scratching the sofa! Otherwise neuter-or meet friends with male Yorkies at their places/at the park! Does he do this to females too? |
I did not have my yorkie neutered and with a few no's and took away what he was humping he soon stoped. |
preventing unwanted behaviour If it really is a problem to you and you other methods fail, there is a citronella collar that is remote controlled. When the undesired behaviour happens you click it to spray a fine mist of citronella, which is harmless , but the dog will hate the smell.....and associate the smell with the behaviour after a time.It really does work, but I dont reccomend for dogs with asthma or bronchial problems. http://www.multivet-inter.com/master..._training.html |
Does he have a stuffed animal that is about his size that he can hump. Chachi does and humps that and not our other dog. We got him neutered and he stopped but the other day his stuffed animal was out and he started humping it. |
he humps stuffed animals too. he has tried to hump other dogs b4 then he would stop. i thought it was a dominance thing. with this dog he won't give up. he's a humpaholic. today the same dog came over again and it was a repeat from yesterday. he was even more aggressive with the humping today. i was very stern with him and he didn't care. i had to take him into the house. i think i'm going to try the paper towel roll method. i outta paper towels. darn. i guess i should get off y' t and go shopping! |
The paper towel roll really really helped with one of our extremely stubborn yorkies. GOOD LUCK! Just be persistent and you will find something that works. |
I don't think a little "bam on the butt" hurts our little dogs -- as long as we really don't hurt them at all. Mine would rather think I'm playing when I do this - except for the fact that he hears my "stern tone of voice" along with it. I think it's the combination that he considers discipline -- not the little butt tap. Carol Jean |
neutering my boy was two when he got neutered and it god rid of most of his more obnoxious behaviour. Now he only tries to hump the Evil Wee when she's in season. I'm sure less testosterone would help at least a little bit! Time out may help and meeting the male doggy on neutral territory will probably make a huge difference. As much as we think of them like little people they are still doggies, with doggy urges and doggy needs. |

I don't agree with your fiance' I don't think a light smack will stop the behavior. To me this seems to be something that dogs do, now I don't allow George to continue to do it I will tell him No and then give him a toy and start playing with him and his toy. Our Boxer who is 6 and still humps when my fiance' is wrestling with her, it's a total sign of dominance. She has been spayed since she was 1. Good luck with it. |
