Leash training.. What is the best way to get my Yorkie to walk on a leash? I try she sits down and will not move. I try to force her a little but afraid of hurting her. We went to the park today and my other dog walked fine and I had to carry her the entire time...ha ha I kept trying to put her down and try but no luck. |
Let her walk around inside the house with the leash attached so she can get used to it. |

Thank you both so much! I am going to try inside first with some treats. Maybe by summer we can go to the park and I won't have to carry her! ha ha |
Make sure you are using a harness, OK? Harnesses are better than collars. Yorkies have sensitive tracheas! Here's a link with some harnesses Chattiesmom made for my girls!:p http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sho...d.php?p=555951 |
Bonnie did the same thing when I tried her with a collar and leash...she would sit and not move an inch. Then I found YT and read about Harnesses, so I tried that and she did great...no problems at all. In addition to it being harmful for them to wear a collar, I think it is uncomfortable also. Good Luck! |
My boyfriend and I also use a harness on our yorkies. At first we were having trouble getting them to walk with their leahes but now they do a great job. Usually he hold on to the leashes and I walk a little ahead of them and just say come on lexxie / bailey and they are happy to follow. We had a hard time at first but once we've started this it worked very well. Now they don't mind walking with it. They still have their moments where they will be stubborn but most of the time they do great! |
Start out with a really short leash and just let her drag it around inside the house. I started this way with Jaxon and eventually he wasn't scared of it. Then I started using the leash indoors just until he was used to it. We slowly built up and now he goes for long walks every day. I just started using a harness vest which is much better. |
