He Doesnt Sleep:( I've had Stanley for a little over 3 weeks now. For the first few days, he didn't sleep AT ALL. Then he started getting better and going to sleep at the same time as I did. Now he doesn't go to sleep when I turn the lights off and just keeps walking around and tries to get on the bed. When I let him on the bed, he'll just keep jumping on my face and biting everything in sight!! When I put him down he'll run around for about an hour and then finally fall asleep...he wakes up maybe an hour later and runs again. what do i do??? I need sleep!! |
How old is your puppy? I am sure he is adjusting to his new surroundings. Are you crating him at nite? Plenty of play during the day will make him tired. You say he runs around to get up on your bed at nite, is he free to roam at nite? It would help if you gave a little more info on your Stanley, age, weight, what you're feeding, health etc. When I first got April she was 10 weeks old, she slept little naps during the day but not for long. She is like the energizer bunny!! She is about 4 months now and she just began sleeping through the nite, without having to get up to go potty. But when we do wake up, she is all over me with the kisses/play bites and wanna-plays :) MaryKay AprilLoves' Mommy |
Stanley has just turned 4 months old on the 22nd of April! I don't crate him at night...I let him sleep on a blanket and bed on the floor so he is free to roam. He is about 4 lbs and I'm feeding him Royal Canin Mini Puppy 33. He's in good health except he's had kennel cough for a few weeks now:( I took him to the vet last week and have been giving him antibiotics for over a week now. Stanley wakes up maybe once or twice during the night to go to the bathroom. Does April tend to bite on things?? Stanley does..he likes to bite on everything!! I hope he grows out of it... |
I would try confining him a little more at night that might help him settle down. Good luck it will get easier as he grows. |

Start crate training! I've had Bella for two mths (she's almost five mths old now) and I started crating her right away. She does really well, and sleeps through the night. Only once or twice when we first got her, she woke us to go potty. She did whine the first few nights in the crate, but only for a little while and I ignored her. She'd also whine/bark when I got up to pee but I ignored her then as well (yeah, I know... seems cruel ;) ) but within a week or so, she had stopped whining completely and goes straight to sleep. Good luck! |
What kind/size crate should I use? I'm just afraid that he wouldn't wake me up when he needs to go pee and might just pee on his bed. |
Make sure it's snug (but enough room to stand/turn around in). I use a small cat crate (the airline carrier type). I line the crate w/receiving/baby blankets. She likes to snuggle in them and I found w/her "bed" she can't do that, so the bed is in the living room for rests during the day. I also have her on my night stand right next to my bed so I can hear her if she whines. The couple times she woke up whining (to pee) I took her out (quietly, no noise and minimal lights) and put her right back in the crate. She kind of scratched at the "door" or the cage but I ignored her, and she went back to sleep. :) |
Ceeby has slept thru the night since he was about ten weeks old or younger. it was right after I got him at eight weeks. All three of mine, all ages, sleep thru the night and always have so i thought it was normal. they are not crated but have a gated area and all have their beds but usually all three line up on the couch. I turn the tv off and lights out about 9:30 pm but they usually are asleep a little before that. Occassionally, I see signs that someone has been awake and playing but not very often. They also take about an hours nap two or three times a day as regular as clockwork. Just like babies. |
Do you walk him regularly? A well-exercised dog is a calmer, better sleeping dog :) |
That is also another issue...he only likes to run wildly...if I put a leash on his harness he'll sit in place and wont move. |
Do you have a fenced yard for him to run in? My dogs have almost an acree fenced in just for them. I have regular chain link then because they are so tiny, they could get thru it, my hubby put rabbit wire around that. Down low where they are. My dogs have never had a collar or harness on them except one time, I hogtied Ceeby and put a cat collar and leash on him for the vet. I just hold him in my arms at the vet but the policy is on a leash so I put one on him once and still held him. |

Sounds like a pup to me! I'm a night owl - so my dog's sleeping habits might be a little different than some. But, nevertheless, it seems like they start settling down around 8 or 9 in the evening ---probably because it's getting dark out. But they don't stay sleeping. I let my Bichon out for the last time around 11:00. And, I remember one night playing with my Yorkie pup around 2 am.... asking him if he was ever going to go to sleep. Good luck -- Carol Jean |

Thank goodness as I live in the country and don't like going out in the middle of the night. I have a pen for her just because I don't like her running around the yard at night even though it has a regular fence around it. I would not have a dog with out a crate, it also protects them from electric cords and other dangers. Mary K. Lillie Belle's Mom |
If puppies are like babies -- they are all different. Some babies sleep well from the get-go and others keep their parents up for months. I don't know what you can do. Perhaps as he gets older, he'll adjust better to your sleep pattern. My pup is about 9 months old now - and never wakes me up - but when I get up in the morning, I can tell that he has been up and has been doing things during the night. I find things moved around and toys out - for instance. At least, he's quiet. Good luck! Carol Jean |
Make sure you wear him out before bedtime. A long walk or long game of fetch are helpful. Try a small crate, you might be surprised. Loki would bang on the door to let us know he had to go out. For the first few months I set an alarm for every 3 hours, then 4, then slowly he started to sleep through the night. Better to wake up once than clean up a wet dog in the morning! He still needs to go out in the middle of the night once in a while, like if he drinks too much before bed, but he lets us know. Also, don't put up with any nonsense at night. Taking him out to pee is perfectly fine, but then it's back to bed and ignore him. After a few nights he will learn he is not getting attention at night and he'll behave. I do not suggest letting them sleep with you until they can hold it through the night. It's not forever. Loki now sleeps with us whenever he wants, usually when it's cold out. |
