Observations from the first walk
 

It is a lovely 65° day in New York today and I live in a very private area where everybody has a dog. My 10 week old puppy went to the vet for the first time yesterday and the doctor said no rabies shot until he gets a little bigger. It is such a lovely day today and I couldn't resist taking Napoleon out for a 20 minute walk. I made sure no one else was walking their dogs and Napoleon and I went out.

This is what I noticed he did. He went into every grassy area he saw (which is every 2 feet; everyone in this neighborhood has a grassy yard) and in the grassy area he ate the grass and I think the dirt too. Is that normal for him?
He peed atleast twice but I didn't poop. I didn't expect him to but I brought along a few treats anyway.

I introduced him to the two little girls that live next door and they just loved him! He is such a gentlemen :cool:

Also, he got really dirty and chewed on sticks, I didn't think that was ok so I took them away.

Right now, as I am typing, he is sleeping on my bed in back of me. I guess these walks are pretty tiring for such a little monster like Napoleon. It is so gorgeous out though! I just couldnt say home with him..Sorry Dr. Shmidt (of Howard Beach Animal Clinic) My pup is goin out with/without the rabies. (of course only if no dogs are around) ;p

That sounds like a lovely and peaceful day to spend with your darling. :)

It's normal for puppies to chew everything they see. My puppy used to have a tendency to eat other dogs' poop, ugh! So watch out for that...

BTW, my puppy is also named Napoleon. LOL!

I hope you will post some pics of him -- he sounds really cute.

That sounds like fun. It's raining in Wisconsin today. I had been looking forward to a long walk in the park with Trixie. Instead we're bored and inside ;) Looking forward to more days like yours!!!

as for the chewing, they will try to eat anything and everything the can get ahold of, they are just like human children and have to test it out with there mouths

Yep Its True. They Are Crazy About Stuff. Whether It May Be My Poor Ankles, My Poor Hands, Or An Old Sock Or Toy. Is There Anyway To Stop The Intensive Biting. I Know He Is Teething But Is There Anything I Can Do To Lessen "my" Pain

Dogs and cats both love eating grass. It doesn't hurt them at all. If, after eating grass, you see them "hacking" or spitting up a little -- this is only because a piece of grass got stuck in their throat, and they're trying to cough it up. They aren't sick.....

Mine all especially love any new grass that is growing - around fences, trees, etc. It sure must taste good to them. Mine would stand there and eat it all day.

I just started walking my yorkie without his rabies shots too. I felt so guilty the first time, but I wanted him to enjoy the day and see how much fun the world outside our house could be! :) I've noticed that it usually takes about a block to block and a half where Mojo is obsessed with every single plant, but then he seems to really get into the walk. I constantly talk to him and tell him how good he's doing. I also break into a quick jog for several seconds just to get his attention and get him excited. It's definitely an experience. But he completely passes out when we get home and I get a much deserved break! ;)

i'm a little concerned! you said your pup was ten weeks old--he has had his parvo etc. shots,hasn't he? Here you get them at 12 weeks and have to wait another week before venturing out of your own yard. There have been so many heartbreaking stories about parvo on this site-I would hate it to happen to you. You are safe to take your pup to other people's gardens who have vaccinated dogs or no dogs. Doesn't matter that there are no dogs around on the street--there will have been and they will have left their mark. You can always carry him outside at first.

If you are covered for parvo-that's great--enjoy!

My yorkie is 13 months old and she still goes crazy for grassy patches. I have no clue what about the grass she likes so much. You have to stop her from eating stuff you don't want her to eat or chew but being that you are doing it while she's so young a few weeks from now you won't even remember her ever doing it. You'll break her right out of that.
