do yorkies go through "the terrible 2's? my boyfriend and i just got the most adorable yorkie male. he's normally such a good boy (4 mo. old), but lately he poops and pees near the pad, on a rug, or by the stairs. he trained on the pads pretty easily but now sometimes he does his business on the pad and sometimes not. i heard that sometimes they do this on purpose if their mad at you. is this true? do they have an equivalent to a human's terrible 2's phase? do i need to take serious action or is this something that will pass? |

My boy did the exact same thing. It seemed like at first he was a complete angel and when on the pad, then as time went on he started going off the pad. He is not doing it because he is mad at you, he just doesn't understand yet. All you need to do is go back and reinforce him going on the pad. I had to start crating mine again. After about a week of this, I put him in his excercise pen with his crate, pad, food, water, toys and he now goes on the pad. They just have to learn that going on the rug is unacceptable and that the only acceptable place would be to go on the pad or outside. Here is full proof technique. Crate him. First thing in the morning let him out, put him immediately on the pad and tell him to go potty. If he does reward him and give him big praises. To seal the deal let him out to play, since you know he has releived himself and shoulden't have to go for awhile. If he doesn't go, put him back in the crate. In 10 minutes let him out and give him another chance. Repeat this until he goes. He will quickly learn that if he wants out to play he has to go potty first. Make sure you are taking him to go potty quite often. Mine has to go every five hours, when I first got him, it was every 3 hours. Whenever he was bad and went on the carpet he was told no and was put in a time out corner for a couple of minutes. All in all, he needs retrained. Always be consistent and patient and he will get the hang of it. :) |
I would say absolutely they do - Twinkle is almost 6 months and she is doing the same pooping thing, she has totally forgot how to sit or give her paw, she is biting everything and everyone, she wont come back when i call her, but she is teething so i just forgive it all and hope that she will go back to her normal sweet self soon!!     |
