Looking for advice - desperate
 

Hi everyone:
I have 2 yorkies one 5 y/o male (mugsy) & one 3 y/o female (madison). My male tends to pee on my curtains and on the corner of my bed when we leave the house. We have a pet door so he is able to go outside and relieve himself anytime. When we leave for work they are confined to an area with their crate and use of the pet door, but my male will then lift his leg on the gate or door. I can't figure out why he does this (it started 1 year ago). They are not totally alone during the day either we have an inlaw apartment (with a pet door) and they spend most of the day with my father in law. Can someone offer some time of advice to control this behavior? My husband and my father in law hit him and it absolutey breaks my heart to see this!

I took my dogs to the vet yesterday for their check up and the vet said absolutely no hitting!!! Hopefully they'll get the hint!

Sorry this is so long winded. I really need to solve this issue soon :O) Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

My guess he is marking his territory. Is he neutered and is she spayed? Sometimes getting both fix will solve the problem.

He's definatley marking. My mom's Maltese did this for 7 years and when she had him neutered he stopped immediately.

i'm having the SAME problem now with my 7yr old cat, last friday he "marked" his territory on my living room curtains, its the most disgusting smell in the world. i had a carpet cleaning company come in on saturday morning and clean the area, i also cleaned my curtains and sprayed some product that claims to "prevent pets from marking the area" and SUNDAY MORNING my son and i were sitting on the couch watching The Incredibles and the cat went right back that same spot and "marked" it again RIGHT IN FRONT OF US!!! :eek:

i can't keep paying to get the carpet cleaned so i bought a carpet cleaing wet/dry vacuum thingy this morning but i can't keep cleaning this EVERYDAY. i don't know what to do, it's horrible. i'm worried about my yorkie Lefty picking up this bad habit from my cat.

my cat is 7yrs old, neutured and only started doin this friday, out of the BLUE. what causes this? and how do you stop it? :confused:
any advice is MUCH MUCH MUCH appreciated . . .

Thanks for the responses iheartyorkies & yorkieagility. In answer to your question, yes they have both been fixed. Is there a way to correct him when he marks?

How long have they both been fixed? In a male dog, it can take up to a year for all the testosterone to leave his system. So, if you just got them fixed it might take awhile before he stop.

If he has been fixed for awhile, he probably has developed a habit for marking and it is extremely hard to break. You have to catch him in the act and correct him. If you don't he will not understand why he is being corrected. Unfortunately, sometimes even that doesn't work.

However, I will give you a quick solution while you are working on his marking problem. The solution is belly bands. It basically a fabric belt that your male dogs wear to cover their private parts. When he lifts up his leg to mark, he will pee on the belly band and not on your curtains. Here is a link to what it looks like http://mall.cairnrescue.com/inv_bellyband.htm

He's been fixed since a pup he is 5 now. Thanks yorkie agility for your help I will look at the bellybands :)

our big boy (2 years) was well trained...is neutered...and when we are home always goes outside...but we have discovered that when we go out now, he is prone to lifting his leg (latest incident on clean laundry in a basket left on the floor)...I really believe it is an emotional thing...when we first got him he was rarely left alone...and at first being left alone he would hold it for a considerable length of time... (now he's even got a lil sister for company)...but lately he will often urinate if I just run out for a cup of coffee...not always...but a far cry from the never we had gotten used to with him...we watch his countenance droop as my wife gets ready for work...or when I start up the truck to leave...he will sit looking so forlorn and not even follow us to the door, just lays across the arm of the sofa, or at the top of the stairs...it's true when they tell you these dogs are not meant to be left alone for extended periods...and we try not to, my departures can be staggered to minimize their solitude...but I believe that's part of their precious nature...they get very emotionally involved with you...but my wife blames it on his being a typical moody "boy"

Well Israel your dog sounds alot like my Mugsy. It breaks my heart to leave him home but I can't take him to work. My hubby does sometimes but then Madi feels bad :( Good news is I just reduced my work schedule to a 4 day work week so maybe he'll feel better spending Friday's with his mom! I don't have any advice cuz I'm dealing with this also. (Not the hitting). I bet it breaks your heart.:unlove: I couldn't handle that one. I have been thinking about the bands too but I can't bring myself to put a pad on Frankie. He goes to work with me everyday too. My client's love him.
