My little guy weighs 10lbs & he will be 6 months old on June 1st. Guess some of you wouldn't be too happy!! He is not fat. He is kind of long & solid. I am very happy because he is in excellent health, has no problems at all & is turning out to be a very good dog! I didn't get him hoping he would be a little tiny thing, I just wanted a "small" dog that was cute, and that is what I got! |
I also have two "Teapots".Peanut is now 8months and 13lbs. and Thumper will be about 15lbs.He is now 16weeks and 8lbs. I knew Thumper will be on the bigger side because is Mom is 16lbs. I was very surprised with Peanut.Because the Breeder told me he would be about 6-7lbs.His Mom is 6lbs and Dad is 3lbs I love my big guys so much. They are both healthy and loved. |
I have had people tell me there is no WAY my Tootie is a full Yorkie but the more I learn, the more I find that there are more of them his size (12 lbs.) than small..... He is so much fun and no one has to walk around scared to squash him... HAHA... I am looking tho, to adopt an adult "little" girl.... he was just not meant to be tiny, considering his best bud is my 80 lb. lab! d |
Hi - I couldn't help but comment on some of the posts in this thread. First of all I sympatize with the desire for a Yorkie to be what the breed standard describes. Isn't size one of the reasons we pick out a Yorkie? I have had 2 Yorkies and on Monday will be picking up my third puppy. My first "Yorkie" was a whopping 20lbs!! I loved every ounce of him! At the time I got him I had no idea what a Yorkie puppy should look like. He was 5 1/2 lbs at 12 weeks old and the breeder told me he was "done growing". He was short legged, had a long body, his huge ears were hopelessly down (she said they'd go up), his nose was long. He was anything but "right" according to the standard, but I absolutely LOVED him. I don't think it is right for breeders to lie. My vet took one look at Tobey and said if I wanted a Yorkie to BRING HIM BACK! But my heart was already tied with his... So later we got a second one. This time we did our research. Pepper is a wonderful dog, but he is 9 1/2 lbs. According to the chart, according to triple 8 weeks, and double 12 weeks he should have been 6 1/2 lbs. He never quit growing. At a year old we think he is done. I think some breeders are not being honest when they say the mother is 5lbs and dad is 3lbs. I really wish I would have had the courage with this third puppy to ask the breeder to put the mom and dad on a scale in front of me! I'm sorry, but this mother doesn't look like 7lbs to me. But I love the puppy! She was 1 lb 14 oz last time I visited and she was 8 weeks old. Who knows how she'll turn out. I'm prepared to love her whatever the size, but I sure do wish breeders would be a little more careful about the quality of dogs they are breeding. I wish I could be sure they were being honest. I don't like to challenge a person's integrity, I like to believe what I'm told! As to the "chart" - I'm thankful for it. I fully realize it is intended for her dogs and that it is only a guide, but I rather like it. I think it is going to be fun to see how my newest puppy will follow the chart! I just hope she fits the standard this time! Smiles to all!!!~ |
If you ask anyone who owns a yorkie what attracted you to the breed? One of the things they will tell you is the size. If I wanted a bigger yorkie I would by a silky instead because they are cheaper. I agree that they are two different breeds, but there is enough alike to go cheaper. |

You can't always go by the parents' weights, you just have to find a breeder that knows their lines well and knows approximately how big a puppy will get based on past experiences with that particular line. I know some who had bigger yorkie parents that produced small and tiny babies and vice versa. I love watching puppies grow also, of course I am always curious and try to guess how they will turn out. :) :) Hope you enjoy it here it a YT.:animal-pa |

But gotta admit, I still love kizzy and she isnt big at all to me. |
I Bought Two Females From The Same Lady, Same Parents, Different Litters ,the 1st One I Got Weighed 4 Lbs. The Second One I Got Weighed 8 Lbs. She Was Surprised That I Too Had Gotten A Little 4lber, Because Out Of The 3 Litters She Had They All Weighed Between 7-10lbs. |
I don't understand I guess..the mentality that the bigger the yorkie (still within standard) the less it should cost. We "scold" breeders of tinies who do it on purpose (and market them as "teacups") yet when the market calls for such small dogs (under five lbs) we as the american public are inadvertantly telling them to breed small if they want to make any money at it. I can understand selling an over standard yorkie for less money than you would one within standard, which would be 8+ lbs, and I can understand selling EXTREMELY small pups for slightly more, which would IMHO reflect the amount of time and care you had to put into those puppies, extra vetting, etc..small pups are very difficult to raise, and you often have to keep them much longer than a larger pup...their price should not be specifically because they are small pups. However, anything within standard should not be "priced" based on size...and yes that includes up to 7 lbs. If you don't like what someone is asking for their puppy, or you don't like the puppy's size...well then go elsewhere. QUALITY and health are the two most important factors when buying a puppy, IMHO. Quality incudes being within standard size. You don't find quality and health at a pet store, a puppymill, a byb, etc. |
Hi everyone! I like this thread cause it just keeps going. I am here to update you on Malibu's size...She is 4.4 lbs at 4 1/2 months. I am giving up hope of her staying under 5lbs as I was told she would. And now I am looking to buy another Yorkie to keep her company and to maybe go with me places - I am assuming Malibu will be much bigger than I expected. So my question now is for those of you who do have Yorkies that are tiny in size...meaning under 5 lbs - where did you get your puppy? I have been researching for the past month for a breeder that has had generations of VERY tiny litters. I just don't know who to believe anymore. I am thinking that now I will say I want one that will be 3 lbs full grown so that maybe I will get a 5-6 lb dog, because apparently every dog I hear of here has grown past its expected weight. It would also help if the breeder was in the NY/Long Island area. Thanks a bunch!:) |
[QUOTE=cmedici13 Plus, the reason I wanted a Yorkie was to be able to carry her around and take her on the plane with me. [/QUOTE] I don't think you will have to worry about being able to fly with your baby under the seat on flights. We had a Silkie Terrier that was 11 lbs. She flew with us everywhere in a soft-sided Sherpa pet travel bag under the seat in front of us. She passed away this year and we got "Taylor".... our little Yorkie baby. Taylor is looking like he is going to be bigger than his parents too. He is 4 lb's 12 oz at 14 weeks now.... I am hoping that he is about 7 lbs when he's full grown but it looks like he will exceed that. I'm not too worried because surely he won't be bigger than our Silkie was. Hope this helps relieve your mind. Gayle_T ...."Taylor's" Mom :aimeeyork |
My dog weighed 3 lbs at 12 weeks My yorkie weighed 3 lbs at 12 weeks. When I bought him the breeder said he prob wouldn't go over 4 lbs. I saw both parents and they were small a 4 lb and a 5.5 lb. My Charlie is now 7 mos. and he is 5 lbs and hasnt' grown in the last month, I'm thinking he prob wont, even though he is 5 lbs. he really doesn't look like he weighs that much he is small and compact and I don't think I would have a prob traveling with him. You may want to hold off of the second one as you may still be able to travel with this one, and to travel with 2 would be much harder. According to the chart mine should go to 6 lbs or better but I know these little ones sometimes do stop growing at 6 or 7 mos. My teacup poodle is 3 lbs and quit growing at 6 mos. One just never knows. Just llove your baby and don't worry so much about the size. It is important they are healthy and love us as we love them. I have a 7 lb poodle that was suppose to be 3 lbs. I love him anyway and wouldn't dream of parting with him. Wish you only the best |
I also think that price should not be based on the size of a pup. The smaller the pup the more care you have to put out and more health risks. I wasn't looking for a "TINY" yorkie and I got one. THe breeder was very honest, in my own opinions, and a very nice lady, and she also is my neighbor so she couldn't lie to me. Buttercup is now 5 months today and weighs 2.14lbs according to the vet last week. |
I spoke to the breeder today that I got Charlie from and she said the female from the same parents is only 2 1/2 lbs. and the woman is upset cuz she wanted a dog a little bigger so she could hug it and not be afraid of breaking it. I got Charlie and I wanted him to be a bit smaller... hmmm a trade? NO WAY! We both love our babies no matter the size. Just goes to show you it really is almost impossible for breeders to guarantee these littles ones wts at maturity. |

I have to choose between 3 girls in few weeks, and I don't know what specifics to look for in 8 weeks old puppy. Any suggestions? |
Hello Mom to Malibu, I understand your frustration and sympathize with you. You wanted a tiny dog and now you have a standard dog. It's just a matter of not getting what you paid for and what you wanted. I bought my daughter a pup for Christmas andit was the hardest thing to do. I went to kennels and couldn't trust the people there. They acted like they were hiding the truth. I could hear tons of dogs barking and they were telling me these were the parents? aND I looked at alot of "yorkieish" dogs. ie: looked like they had silky in them. Wrong face, Long snout, odd colors, etc. If you can, try to be patient. Go to alot of places to look.I found Bella at a private home, saw her parents and sister. The parents were like large hamsters with long hair. Dad was two and one half lbs and mom was three. Bella was a csection. She weighed l.6 lbs at 12 wks. and tips the scales at three lbs now, will be one year in Sept. I paid extra for her because she was small. So, i feel bad for you because you paid hard earned money and didn't get your petite dog. I have since decided I want a small dog for myself and I can't find anyone I completely trust , however, there are good breeders on YT. I think the growth charts are RIGHT ON. IT is all you can go by unless you have seen pups from same parents in past and have a history. Bellas mom is retired now after two c sections or i would get one from her. I intend on seeing my dog even if i have to fly to a breeder in Canada. Good luck to you, DEnise |

Any update on your dogs weight??? What does she weigh now, I'm sure she is full grown now. |
Hi all.... Our furbaby, Taylor, was supposed to be between 5 - 7 pounds. We saw his parents and went to a breeder that was highly recommended to us. Taylor is now almost 6 months old and it tipping the scale at about 9 pounds. We've been very surprised at how he keeps growing and growing..... The thing that we actually are not too unhappy about is that we want to be able to take him on boat trips with us and being a little bigger/bouncier size will actually be better. Our only concern is that he needs to be able to fly under the seat with us on flights and if he gets much bigger I'm afraid that he might not fit. My husband is happy about his size and I feel there is just more of him to love. I can understand how if you expected a "Purse Baby" that ending up with a "Taylor-Size" Yorkie could be very upsetting though to some, especially if you paid a lot more with the promise that you were going to have a very small dog. |

its hard to trust any breeder, ask for at least 3-4 generation knowledge....... if the breeder knows size of parents and grandparents its very helpful. i say through out the chart, its genetics.....my lil one was littelest in litter and i know the smallest can end up being the biggest in any breed. So next time do your home work and ask alot of questions, especially if they have parents and grandparents, see their pedigree and pictures, ask for weights and at what age. That is why my next male will be at least 6 or 7 months old, then i know if he is staying cobby or getting longer........Brittany:aimeeyork |
How common is it for Yorkies to be too tall & thin? Mine appears that way at this stage? I see so many posts about them getting long but I really think mine is getting tall. She seems very delicate and small for her height. I also wondered if anyone knows if this propensity for producing pups that exceed the breed standard is common among all breeds or just seems to be a Yorkie trait. For instance if you were to purchase a toy poodle pup, does it frequently grow to be a miniature instead? I am coming to the conclusion that we as owner/purchasers are a lot of the problem. If we refused to pay the exorbitant prices that breeders ask for their "teacups", maybe they would be more truthful on their "guestimates". I'm afraid by our obsession with smaller is better/cuter, that we encourage them to underestimate the pups predicted size and maybe even in some cases sell underage pups to make it appear that they will be small dogs. In all honesty, in most cases, we should put our vanity and selfishness aside and be rescuing the dogs from the shelters that other irresponsible breeders/owners have produced and failed to give proper care & attention.:aimeeyork |
I always tell the genetics and size of my dogs..... But i think on the whole people are't as honest as me, i tell them i cant garuntee the weight, it will be between 3-7 ot 8 lbs. and you can go on their weight at age, but i dont beleive in the chart, so i am honest about it, if you want to be sure, make sure you buy a 2 or 9 month old pup. then you know what its going to be......My male was and his daughter is like him, fine boned and lil legs make her look talller than she is and she weighs not yet 4lbs. at 7 months..... that was my only litter, i dont breed dogs to make money.......Brittany |
I was told Piper wouldn't be over 5 lbs also. She weighed 1.6 at 13 weeks. She now weighs 6.3 at 6 months. She just loves to eat, my little piggy. Misha was supposed to be under 5 also. She now weighs 6.6 at 11 months. I'm happy with both, I don't feel having them so small I'll step on them, like when they were smaller. They are still small compared to my sister in laws Rottweiler puppy that is 12 weeks old at 16 lbs. |
you are lucky My 5 month old puppy weighs 2lb. 5 oz. and both the breeder and my vet say I will be lucky for him to top out at 3lb. 3 oz. I had hoped for 5-6 lbs. He is so small that the health and safety issues have me scared. He doesn't know he's small and I'm afraid he'll hurt himself or somebody will step on him. He resembles a large rodent since he's so small. I wish my baby would grow to that size:) |

Your Right I tell people they grow till 9months some of them, so dont let anyone tell you at 6months they are done growing. some are some are't...so you have to go on parents size and grand parents size........brittany:aimeeyork  |
Itsey in my pic under name, is 8 months and just hit 4lbs...... she didnt get tyo 2lbs till 13 weeks then gained a pound in next 5 weeks then nothing for awhile, just an ounce here and there........brittany:aimeeyork |
My little girl is still 1 8 oz.and is 18 weeks. Tucker is 10 months old and weighs 2 lbs. they are both so little I am hoping that my little girl will be bigger then my male but I don't know. |
I'm glad to see so many puppies that are small. I'm not feeling as overwhelmed as I see how sturdy and fearless he is for his size. I've never had a dog this small, but he sure is cute and cuddly. Thanks for the responses |
