Crate baby Yet another question about crating. If your baby sleeps in the crate at night, up until what age do you keep the door closed until they are ok. Diezel has been sleeping in the crate for around 6 months now (after a brief test with letting him sleep out of it) And althought he is fine in there. Hardley ever cries or bark unless he is to wired when its nani time. But I would like to be able to go to sleep early if I wanted to and not have to time it around what time I have to get up to let him out. I have tried to put the xpen around it with a wee wee pad inside and he just doesnt like that. Barks and cries all night. Do I go back to basics and try to ignore it and just let him bark it out? Or has it not been long enough. I do not keep him in there for potty training purposes, it is just so that I can sleep without him at the side of my bed in my face trying to wake me up. |
Well my yorkie is a year old and we still close the door at night. We tried a few weeks ago to let her sleep with it open and at 2 in the morning she is sneaking around and we just didn't like it. I think we will start leaving it open again in about 6 more months. This will be around the same time we start trying to let her run free while we're out the house. |
Never thought of that Good Question...I have a 3 year old and we still shut his crate door at night when it is time to go to bed. I don't want him up in the middle of the night wandering all over the house. No telling what he might get into if I ever left the door open. Of course he might just sleep all night but I never thought of taking a chance and leaving it open. |
IT's definetely a question of safety. Our bichon/poodle is 3 and we still shut his crate gate. Why take the chance of letting them roam at night..they could get into something, but then again I don't let my dogs roam free in my home when I'm not there either. I wouldn't be able to trust them, I can barely trust my own kids!! I know what you mean about going to bed early and wanting to shut down for the night! Maybe if you want to go to bed early and put him in you could make sure to get up earlier in the a.m. to make up for it. We do this on weekends when we want to sleep in a little. We always make sure Winni (and Georgia now too) get to stay up later at night to make up for it! Hope this helps. |

I believe if I wanted to leave the door open, I would go back to the basics with the x pen and ler her cry it out. Ollie hated the crate door closed right from the beginning, so I took the door off and she is confined to the laundry room at night. That way if she has to pee it's not a problem for me. |
Reagan is around 1 1/2 and there is no way we could leave the crate open and her stay in it. I'm always amazed at those pups who go to their cage/pen on their own and sleep. Reagan doesn't like to be within 10 feet of it. She does really well in her cage though, she lays right down and goes to sleep quick and no noise until I get up and start walking around but if it were open she'd be out in a heart beat. As a matter of fact when you go to put her in it you have to walk by our bed and she will try to kick off of you and jump to the bed. We both laugh everytime she does this, which is everytime we put her in her pen. She would do really well at night if she weren't in it, she'd just find a piece of furniture (couch, bed, etc.) to sleep under but I just feel better knowing she's in her pen. Plus I have this fear she's going to get up in the morning before one of us and pee in the floor. |
Loki is 1 1/2. Sometimes he naps or chews on a toy in his crate, but he sleeps with us. Even if he falls asleep in there at night he will come upstairs and sleep at least in his bed in our room, if not on our bed. I only close his crate when he needs some quiet time or when we are not home. To answer your question though, they are old enough when they will tell you they need to go outside (bark, bells) rather than just step out of their crate and pee on the floor. We used to close Loki's crate because he would bang on the crate at night to let us know he needed to go outside. Now he just gets up and goes downstairs and rings his bells. |
Cali has slept with me since she was 5 1/2 months old. She never wet or roamed. At first she would get doen the little stairs I have for her and go in her crate to her wee wee pad and use it and come right back up and go to sleep. Now she sleeps all night until about 6 in the morning. i do keep my bedroom and bathroom door shut .When I am going out for a couple of hours she goes in her crate, all I have to say is I'm going to Nana's and she runs right in and I zip the door shut. Maybe in a couple of months you can try the bed again. I think he will settle down eventually. |
mine sleeps with me My first dog was crate trained at night and yes would get into trouble if he wasn't in there. This dog now is equally mischievous but for some reason will not get into trouble at night. He is 4 1/2 mos and I've had him 2 weeks. He sleeps through the night on my bed. He'll go 8+ hours without needing a bathroom break even during the day. He is amazing. Even when he gets up, he'd rather play then "go". suzie |
