Healthy training treats.... I'm not so sure that "dog treats" are all that healthy - especially if our dogs eat a lot of them. And - my dogs don't like them very well anyway...or at least tire of any one type quickly. Why don't we use a variety of healthy foods for our dogs instead of buying dog treats (sometimes junk food) for our dogs. I have mentioned this before - but my dogs absolutely love pieces of chicken, other meats, cheese, and a variety of other healthy foods. These types of foods are what I use for treats. And - I even consider these treats to be part of their healthy food for the day. And - believe me - this is much more cost effective. I have a lot of things from our dinners or things I have especially cooked for them in baggies in the freezer - to be used for treats. Carol Jean |
That's a great idea. I love giving my boys treats expecially healthy ones. But as soon as we started they acted like they had been fed from the table since day 1. We made a point not to say anything about treats, and go into a different room than the kitchen before we told them what was going on, but they still come running when they hear the cutting of an apple or opening of can. Any ideas on how I can stop that? I don't mean to hijack the thread, just wanted to see if you had a quick solution for this. Thanks ;) |
QUOTE: . . . but they still come running when they hear the cutting of an apple or opening of can. Any ideas on how I can stop that? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Good luck! My dogs have learned every possible sound in the world that has anything remotely to do with food..... And - I have never learned how to be quiet enough or sneaky enough to fool them. I find this totally amazing!!! I can walk into the kitchen - turn on the water, pretend like I'm washing a few dishes, sneak over the fridge, open the door as softly as possible ---- and BAM, they are right at my feet! My dogs can smell a piece of candy through three pillows with a blanket on top! I can sneak a piece of food into the front room when they're not looking, wait 20 minutes, see them sleeping, and go to take a tiny bite - and in a split second, they are both on my lap wanting their share. They can hear the slightest rustle of plastic wrap, aluminum foil, a candy bar wrapper, or a piece of silverware touching anything. They never miss a thing.... You don't know how many times I have said at work, "Boy, it's nice to be able to eat in peace - without - you know who..." ***** The only place I can eat reasonably peacefully is at my dining room table. But even there - they are sitting by me, watching me, and waiting for any leftovers. ***** I think the only way we can ever keep this from happening is to never never never let them have any people food or table food from the day they're born until the day they die.......a hard thing to do! Good luck - Carol Jean Carol Jean |

I use boiled chicken breast for baiting. It's not to fattening. I use to use chicken veana suasages. I've saw many people use uncooked hot dogs. While I've observed others using Bil-Jac liver treats or just plain cooked liver. |
