What the heck?!?! Ok, so you all know that Sully is *usually* an extremely well-behaved, good natured, well-trained dog. WELL.........Houston, we have a problem. EPISODE #1 :dogwalk: Sully and I often go for walks on the beach. The other day, I let Sully off-leash for a few minutes b/c he loves sniffing the waves and chasing seagulls. That was all fine and good until he, umm, marked a towel belonging to a surfer who was on the way to get his towel! :doghop: I can still see the whole thing in slow motion, the surfer-dude, complete with surfboard and wetsuit, saying "noooooooooooo" and sprinting toward his towel. I am coming from the other direction, also sprinting and saying "noooooooo, Sully, nooooo!" So, that was the end of Sully being allowed off-leash on the beach, lol. Can we say EMBARASSING?!!! EPISODE #2.......as if the first one wasn't bad enough. On Saturday evening, we took Sully to the beach while with friends to have our pictures taken as a group with the sunset, etc. on Sullivan's Island by the lighthouse. A six year old girl and a two year old boy come running up to Sully with no fear wanting to pet him. Sully loves kids so of course I allowed it. After a few seconds of petting, Sully sniffs the 2yr old's leg and um, LIFTS HIS!!! Horrified, I snatched my pooch up so quick I'm sure he didn't have the chance to get any pee out but GEEZ!!?!!?! He was on leash and I was less than a foot away even!!! I'm done with this! Sully was neutered at 6 mo. old and he's 1 yr. 8 mo. old now! He never even marked BEFORE he was neutered and I can understand a bush or tree here and there but this is ridiculous. :thumbdown Is there a way to discourage this bad habit or are belly bands my only option?! (He never EVER marks in the house, tho.) And if you don't have any advice for me, yeah well go ahead and laugh 'cos it is pretty funny. Bad, but funny nonetheless. |
Great stories. Sorry, I don't have any suggestions. But don't you hate when they start to regress? :p |
LOL That is pretty funny, I can imagine the look on the surfer dude's face. Sorry I have no advice. Boys will be boys I guess. |
you should you a belly band that's what my mom use's when that happens. :) |
:lol tears :lol tears :sidesplt:  :lol tears ROFL!!!!!! sorry, but that was funny! the surfer story sounds matrix style! no advice here, but you said we could laugh! :p |
I heard Ceasar Milan (sp?) say that when a dog pees on you it's because he doesn't respect you. Not really sure how that applies to the Sully situations since he didn't even know the surfer or little girl but I thought I'd toss it out there. P.S. Are you sure you didn't teach Sully to pee on the surfer's towel? It reminded me of the beer commercial where the guy trained his Beagle to snatch the girls' bikini tops so he could meet them! |

And Nicole, this isn't as much of a "regression" as it is brand new. He never did mark anywhere, inside or out. And about the belly bands thing, wouldn't it be strange to walk my dog on the beach and make him wear a belly band?! I dont' know I mean it's better than him marking a poor little 2yr old boy's leg but geez. (He wagged his tail, licked the boy's face first?! Sully, you're weird.) |
LOL! I would have loved to see the look on the surfers face! |
Omg!!! BWWWWAAAAAHHHAAAHHHAAAA!!!!!!!!!!! :D :D :D Too funny!!! Too darn funny! :p |
Don't mean to laugh, Val, but come on!! It's funny!! LOL!!! I don't know what to suggest, but should you check with a vet to rule out a UTI? It just doesn't sound like the Sully that I know!! :p |

Funny you mention this... FRiday I took Bailey to a new pet store, they had stacks of dog food in piles on the floor, well guess what, everytime we passed on he would Hike his leg on it,, I would pull him quick enough that he would get anything on it,,but I'm like you.. WTH, I understand my episode more, cause I'm sure everything smelled like other dogs,, But your's is strange....hmmmm I'm no help, but I sympathize. |
Waaaah Oh god val...thank for the laugh this morning. I am not laughing at you but with you. Wow I don't know what to make of Sully's little exchange there. Oh goodness. I can see how you would be embarrassed. Good luck in finding out what to do about it. Let us know what works. Just in case we end up in that same situation. For now Lex is only five months and hasn't done any of that. Hugs :D |

ROFLMAO!!!!!! I don't have any advice but OH, SULLY!!!! you've just made my day!! :lol tears :lol tears :lol tears |
Maybe if you just use a belly band for a couple weeks. . . Hoping that after enough time passes he forgets that he likes to mark other people and things, lol. How embarrassing, you poor thing. Maybe the beach is triggering it, lol! I'm sorry, shouldn't laugh, but I'm just keep visualizing. . . |
I feel your pain! Tucker used to pee on every dog he met! He is a terrible marker, still does it all over the house. I usually just yell his name when he does it and he stops. (he is not used to be yelled at so it always makes him stop dead and look at me). I wish I had advice for you. I'm just impressed that you can take him off leash. Tucker would be G-O-N-E! |
LOL...those stories are FUNNY!! Zoe marks trees and poles but squats at home. I'm scared his rebellious days are coming. I hope he picks posessions of hots guys to mark! ;) |
LoL!! I love how you told the story, I felt like I was there. Actually, I have some other advice besides belly bands. I was using belly bands on Wookie, and all they did was make it "ok" for him to pee whenever/whereever he wanted. It got so bad that he was wearing them 24/7 literally. :( He used to mark everything and anything allllll the time. So here are my thoughts.. don't get him used to those. What I do now is.. besides watch him like a hawk.. when he does try to mark, I make a huuuuge fuss about it. Not just me, but whoever is in the room. Just act like it's a huge deal, and it was very very wrong. It has worked like magic on Wookie! I hope this helps |

Yeah, he definitely knows. I talked to my trainer the other day about it. And to dogs, marking is completely different that peeing to them. Especially if it's on a person or a towel. They definitely know the difference between marking and peeing. I went from wookie marking 25 times a day... to trying to mark once a week. You just have to make sure to follow through. Make a huge fuss, and then put him in a place where he is allowed to pee, then praise him for peeing in the right place right away. It's been a miracle saver to me. |
Sometimes - it's only new and different situations or environments that cause this behavior. The first time Kerry, my soon-to-be son in law, brought his dog over to meet me, it came into my house, promptly lifted its leg, and pee'd on my new sofa. Can you imaging how Kerry felt. He almost died ( ...and, of course, he bopped his dog a good one on the head and told him he was bad bad bad - and took him outside -- and scolded him further - like guys do - this is a big dog). BUT - this same dog has visited me a hundred times since then - and I have babysat him many times for several days, and he has never repeated this behavior again. (I guess it was a one-time, visit-to-a-new house thing. (Should mention also that I had two cats and two dogs - that no doubt Kerry's dog smelled the minute he entered my house.) So - perhaps for your pup - just visiting a new place (with tons of water around) is causing part of it. I would think that if he's disciplined every time he does it - he'll stop. Good luck! Maybe, it's your hubby thats teaching him to pee pee on hot surfer dudes towel. He's just helping his daddy out. hahaha. Sorry I have no advice. |
