Teaching to Come I tried to do a search, but it didn't return any results.... What methods did you use to teach your yorkie to come? I want to teach Dolce because when you say "Come here" she just stares at you like you have three heads. I tried putting her harness and leash on her and having treats and pulled her towards me while saying "Come here", but she just wasn't getting it. It got to the point where she'd dig in her feet and I practically had to drag her to me....even with the treat!!! If anyone has any ideas/tips to share, I'd really appreciate it. Also, I'm interested to know how long it took your yorkie to catch on (i.e. one hour long session, a week's worth of daily work, etc.). Dolce has learned some other commands rather quickly, so I was surprised she wasn't getting this one. Thanks! |
I've had the same problem with Jaxon. I've tried the leash/pulling him too but so far no luck. My mom trained her toy poodle this way and he eventually got it. Even worse - now when we're trying to go to bed, we'll try to pick him up and go upstairs - but he thinks its a game and runs away right before you get him. :mad: He knows the word 'up' - we always say it before picking him up, but not sure how to stop the game. It gets a little frustrating, especially when you're tired and just want to go to bed!! |
I use treats, food, and toys with Rocky. He will come when he has his leash on, but will not without it on. Our trainer said that small breed dogs have a hard a time learn "come" command because they get distracted easily. |
i think teaching them to come is the hardest to do.. when lexi is on my deck out in front of the house , i try it .. i use cheerios only, she likes the sweetness of them, honey nut... she comes right away... sometimes i call her without the treat and some how she knows i have nothing for her and she will just look at me as if to say are you crazy mom, no treat no me. i wanna just die.... i think i have to have cheerios on hand all the time no matter where i am and constantly tell her to come...try the honeynut cheerios, it might work. |

We found a way to get ours to come on accident. My mom bought one of those clickers from Petsmart and I clicked it for fun and Logan came running as fast as he could. Now we reinforce it by giving him a treat after we click it in the house. Hopefully when he's loose outside we can click it and he will come running, but we haven't tried it yet. |
Here's how we are learning the "come" command Fagan and I are in beginner obedience class now. The way the trainer is teaching us the "come" command is this way: She put Fagan on a long leash and held him close to her. I start right up to him, show him a treat and back up a good distance(several Feet). Then I give the command "Fagan Come" she lets him go and when he gets to me he gets the treat. To practice at home I just have one of the boys hold onto him and follow the steps above. Now we are at the point where I don't show him the treat, I just have one of the boys hold him then I go a good distance away and give the command. He comes to me and now we have added a sit at the end before he gets the treat. He does great and now will "come" whenever I call him from anywhere in the house. Just keep practicing. We practice all the commands we have learned in class every day. Good luck. |
I used a whistle in the house and everytime I blew it - my pup would come running like a mad little hatter and get a treat. This really worked well. Then I took him outside and he was on a long leash (20 or 30 feet away), and I blew the whistle and he came to me just as fast as he could. We did this over and over again. And - he ran as fast as he could to me everytime I blew the whistle. Then one day, he got loose and was in the back yard. I blew my whistle and had my treat ready - and did he come -- no way!!!!! He just looked at me and went merrily on his way running wherever he wanted to go. It was half an hour before I caught him. It's not easy - good luck to all of us! Carol Jean |
