Drop command Hello, I would like to know how to teach my yorkie the " drop it" command . I started taking Royce for short walks and he tends to want to put in his mouth whatever is on the ground and this is very annoying as im scared of bacterias and germs . Thank you :aimeeyork |
"Drop it" was a pretty easy command for Joey to learn. This is how I did it. Have yummy treats ready. It's probably easiest to start indoors. When he picks up something in his mouth, let him see (or smell, if need be) the treat. As he drops what he has to go for the treat, say "drop it" or whatever cue you want to use. Repeat many, many times. Be careful with your timing. You want to say "drop it" at the exact moment that he is letting go of what's in his mouth. You'll want to slowly build distance between him and the treat so that it doesn't always have to be right under his nose. It won't be very long before you can say "drop it" and he will do so and turn and look for his treat! Naturally, you'll want to start this exercise with lower value objects and gradually move up to the harder stuff. Once he's mastered "drop it", you might also want to teach "leave it" to use before he picks up those undesirable things! Good luck! |
That sounds like a really good training tip. Thank you! I've been wondering the same myself so that's good to know. I shall get cracking on that one. So far we've picked up an old sock, stones, a plastic doll's chair, an assortment of sticks, and copious amounts of chewing gum.. haha!! In terms of puppies picking up stuff, I wouldn't get too freaked out. They're just puppies after all and they're immunity covers them for all sorts of potential problems. If you're scared of microbes and so on, that doesn't necessarily mean that he should be ;) |
