Indoor Training Help.. SOS!
 

My boyfriend bought me our baby a year ago and I'm ashamed to say he still isn't potty trained. We got him when we were living in Pittsburgh and decided wee wee pad training was our only option. I have stuck with it and have found that Romeo is ok about doing number two on the pad, but he urinates all over the house. He marks the corners of tables, chairs, sofas, beds, anything! He's even gone as far as going on our brand new $4000 sofa! :eek: My boyfriend is at his wits end and we are making plans to buy a place in Chicago but he doesnt want Romeo to come along and trash the place. I love my pup, but he'd destroying my relationship! Is Romeo beyond help? Should I hire a trainer? Do I have to say goodbye to my puppy soulmate? Any tips for how you guys have wee wee pad trained would be very appreciated!! :(

I would get some belly bands and put on him as at least this way he will NOT mark every where. The start working with him on going outside.

Gosh...sounds like you're in a dilemma. I don't know much about training. Our male was extremely easy to train once we got our doggy door. Have you tried belly bands?

My problem is that I don't want to train him to go outdoors because I will be in Chicago soon and we all know the weather is too extreme for a 4lb yorkie. I'm living in Miami now and he shivers when its 65! I could take him outside, but I don't want to confuse him.
I've used a diaper but he still goes in it, and drops seep out of it onto furniture, etc. He uses the pads, but also goes everywhere else. We have a female dog in the house, and although they are both fixed, I think her presence has something to do with this. He never marked until I moved back from Pittsburgh and he met her..

I don't agree. I think he'll get used to Chicago. Loki is trained to go outside only even if it's 20 below. He's only out there for 15 seconds and I put a sweater or coat on him. Honestly, when there's snow on the ground I can't get him to come back in - he wants to play in the snow. It's really not too bad. Teaching him that it's only OK to urinate outside might help with the marking problem too.

If pad training isnt working I would go for outdoor training. My dogs go out even though it is very cold outside. When its real cold outside they just go out real quick to go to the bathroom and come right back inside.

He uses the pad, just isn't consistent. For example, in my bedroom he doesnt have a problem going on the pad, its just when he's out roaming the house that he'll pick a spot. I'm going to buy belly bands... Anyone know of any good places to buy them??

One of the YTers, just uses wash cloths and pins them on. You could also use a panty liner up next to him to keep it from dripping.

I agree with the others, they get used to going out in the cold, they just don't stay out long. You can also put a sweater on him if it makes you feel better.

What will happen if you have children...the messes dont even compare...

Mandy and Jack are 1 year old now and I still block off areas. They have access to the kitchen and family room. They are crated at night and if I am not home. However I trained mine to go outside since I had them and once in a great while they will have an accident if they are not feeling well. Jack was fixed at 6 months and never marked Mandy was not fixed until recently. I would say try the outdoor method about every hour. I know that seems like alot but if you want to keep him, I would say it would be worth your while. I also have bells that they ring by each door. Jack uses it but Mandy doesn't. They say that its usually the owner that is at fault and I believe it because every time They have had accidents is because I was not on the ball. There is also some good training websites. I'm the one who uses washclothes - wrap them around his belly - and pin them with a diaper pin.

What I'm doing now is ---

1) He's confined to a large kitchen area when I'm gone and has a pee pad -
but he getting good about not peeing most of the time I'm gone anymore
(and this is for about 6 hours or so).

2) He wears belly bands when he has run of the house. He will definitely
pee any where he wants when he is out of the kitchen.

3) I take off the belly band (which is usually dry) and take him outside
every hour or two - and he's good about going outside.

BUT - if I should miss getting him outside in time - he is still wearing the belly band.

**** I check his belly band often - and if it ever is even slightly damp - I change it.

He's 7 months old now and is stayer drier longer - sometimes for hours. And, he's good about peeing when we go outside. So - he's coming along and getting better all the time.

I know he leaks a little sometimes with his belly band on - but really only occasionally and very little. He doesn't actually pee through it - it just gets damp. A person could line it with a mini pad or something, but I have never really had to do that. Or, if necessary, using two washcloths would absorb more.

And - my little guy weighs 8 1/2 pounds - so, I'm sure he probably pees a little more than yours does.

I think we all struggle with this. And, the important thing for most of us is that we don't want our carpets and furniture ruined prior to our little guys getting trained. I think what I'm doing is actually keeping him from doing any damage in the house.

You could use a baby disposable diaper and wrap it around his wait like a belly band. As far as potty training, you have to watch them and be consistent with where you want them to go potty and praise like crazy when they go in the right place.

have you bought that stuff that you spray on the pee pads ? It's suppose to make them want to pee there, the scent makes them pee in the "right" place! I know how you feel, cause Kloey was going where ever she wanted, but since I got this spray she is going on the pee pads now, also dont let him out of your sight, even if you have to put a leash on him in the house, or a crate, what ever it takes to teach him he can not go in the house!
