Potty in the middle of the night??? We need help! My daughter and I have a Yorkie who just turned 1 a month ago. She is perfectly house trained but for the last month or so she has gotten into the habit of waking up between 1 and 3 A.M. to go outside. Last night I stood and watched her and she just ran around and chased the cats! I can't believe she can't hold it all night because she holds it while we are at school / work. Should we take away her food and water in the evening? Should we be as stubborn as she is and just not take her out in the middle of the night? HELP!! Thanks!!! She's a perfect angel otherwise! (aren't they all?) |
Hi Debbie: One month old is pretty young to expect a puppy to sleep through the night. Just like a baby, they need to poop, urinate or play when everyone else is asleep. Try putting a small ticking clock wrapped in a flannel blanket in the crate at night with the pup. They get pretty lonely. He still yearns for the comfort of his mother. The dog will eventually adjust to your schedule on his own. My yorkie is 4 months old now and just recently started sleeping through the night! We feed Comet 3 meals a day and try to give him all meals before 5pm . His digestive system allows him to go for his last potty walk at about 11:00 pm, and he's good through the night until 6:00am. Hang in there your pup will adjust over the next several months. Just be consistent, and try not to overfeed. :animal-sm |
I think she means that her yorkie turned one year old a month ago. I've heard some people say that they take their dog's food/water away in the evening (time depending on when the dog usually goes to bed for the night). I am really no help. Personally, I would not take her out and leave her food and water. See if she has an accident and then you'll know if she means business. |
Based on my experience, my best guess would be that it's just a phase. Maybe she's not getting enough exercise or she's trying to get attention? Even if it's neither of these, my Sully did this at 7.5 months - and it only lasted like 4 days and he was back to his housebroken self, sleeping thru the night. Good luck! I would definitely recommend taking his food away earlier and making sure he goes #1 and #1 before he goes in his kennel for the night. |
I know how annoying that can be! Lucy went through phases. She is 3 now but at about that age she would bark in the middle of the night to go out and spend ten mins going round the garden growling before going. She grew out of that in about a month although we still have the odd night when she needs to go. Water is available to her at all times, she goes out about 10, then the last person in the house to go to bed lets her out (so I guess thats me tonight!) |
Thanks for all the Tips! Last night I just didn't take her out. She finally got back in bed and went to sleep...no accidents! I think it's just a bad habit she got into with sleeping with my daughter. |
