Need Advice for Leash training.
 

I have a 4 month old Yorkie who HATES the leash. I have been doing pretty good on training him on other things such as he is almost completely potty trained, he will sit, lay down and roll over but he will not walk on a leash. If I try to put him on one he will just refuse to walk and than I feel I am just dragging him along or he will bite at the leash and harness or roll all around on the ground. Can anyone give me any help or suggestions? Thanks!

Just follow him around. Don't try to force him to go where you want, but just follow along after him at this age. Finally one day you will take off a different direction and call him and he'll trot right along with you. When he does praise and give a treat.

I have a 4mo too same situation. Well I take him for walks twice a day. He does the same thing for me as you described. So I grab the harness and literally make him walk, praising him all along. That isn't an easy thing to do for a 5'8" woman LOL. Now Max seems to walk better. I did it little by little. I think I only took him maybe 500 feet one way. He would just about be dragged the whole way but nearly dragged me back. Anyway, my suggestion is do this every day and they'll catch on. It will end up being enjoyable for you both

I start just having my pup following me...no lead. He gets a "come on let's go", inside the house and outside. Gets a treat when I stop and he has followed.

Then, you can put a leash on them and go where they go and they in turn can "come on let's go" with you. Be sure to stop and treat. (If you pull a dog up....he will move downward. If you pull them toward you on a leash the dog will backwards and this can be frightening) I never put any pressure on the lead at first. I equate it more like riding a horse and using the reigns, or driving a car down a straight road, gently, meaning gentle corrections. Before long when you get the lead your dog will know he is "GOING FOR A WALK"!
If you get one that really balks.....try throwing tid bits treats along in front of him also when he is on leash.
I trained a Yorkie for someone who said she could not get him to walk on a lead...by the time she flew home and arrived home from the airport, the dog was lead trained....my husband had to take a short movie before she would believe it.....BUT sometimes you have to work with them a little longer and have patience, treats and a lot of talking and encouragement for the dog.

LOL! I sympathize. Ginger does pretty well with basic obedience and will even heel (IN CLASS), but the rest of the time she thinks the purpose of the leash is to keep me firmly attached to her while she drags me where she wants to go...I've given up! :yelrotflm

A 5 pounder is dragging you around? :>)))
When she starts pulling....stop and walk the other way and she will be saying HUHHHHH! When she starts pulling again - turn and walk the other way. She will get no where fast...but she will get exercse and the idea, if she pulls doesn't get her where she wants to go. It is like a game sometimes to outsmart these little beggers!
You may try keeping her on a tighter lead at your side....but your arm may get sore before she learns....!
