beginning obedience training Hi I have a 9 month yorkie, she listens really well in the house, but if she gets outside she takes off. I have enrolled her in a beginning obedience class. I feel that for her safety and my sanity I need to have verbal control of her. I have heard that you should not use a choke chain on these little ones due to the fact that it is possible to collapse their trachea's. Has anybody here done obedience training with out using a choke chain, and if so what did they use? I hate the thought of possible hurting her! The instructor told me that she has never seen this happen. But I still feel very skeptical |
I also responded to your question in the other thread that was started by Mike, but once again Ted goes to obedience and we use a harness. I would NEVER use a choke collar and I don't care what the trainer says. If they insist then I would be looking for a new trainer. The first night of class I tried just his regular collar but I just wasn't comfortable using even that. I don't think there should even be an issue with the trainer as long as your dog is being restrained and you have control over it...Hope it is warming up in Minnesota? Man, I was back there 2 weeks ago and about froze to death! Plus, I was also lucky enough to get in on that last snow storm to boot... |
I would never use a choke chain on a small dog. This will sound harsh, but I also would never again attend an obedience class where the trainer encourages the use of choke chains on any dog! "For me and my house", we will only use positive training classes from now. |
Rosi is in beginner class @petsmart and she just turned 1 , i was ready for a fight because Rosi wears a harness and i was going to refuse to put collar on. But Trainer was ok with harness, feel a good trainer should know about yorkie's and their sensitive throats ! |

Amen to that. Why on earth would one need a choke chain on a yorkie? Choke chains are for big dogs that are too strong to hold back. And now they don't even use choke chains, they have pinch collars, that pinch the skin rather than to choke the dog. It's more like a bite from the alpha dog. |
Even the choke chains don't work on big dogs. I use a harness on my big dog. You are much better off using positive training and treats. |
