Thank you all for your helpful ideas! This is what I think is going to work the best for us: I've got a pen that is about 3X3 and I'll cover that with pads and paper and leave her kennel open with her blanket or bed inside and tons of fun toys and food and water of course for when I am not home. Then when I am home we will be able to sleep in an open kennel or play around the house and try to go potty outside but have pads available or wear a diaper. Slowly I'll take the pads away until there is only one and eventually I'd like to put the pad in a covered litter box...but I know that is a long way off. I'd really like her to learn to only go potty outside which is why I was a little resistant to pads, but I realize that in a few years I will be pulling some monster shifts in the hospital and might not always be able to be home as much to take her out so pad training is probably best. I was going to try the poochy bells to go outside when I am home, but that seems like an aweful lot of confusing things for a young girl to remember all for a simple potty so I do not think we will get those. Thank you all for sharing your experience to a newbie! My new puppy thanks you for not confusing her too much! |
