Training Help Please Hi there!! My little girl is 16 weeks and the only two comands she knows are 'no' and 'come'. She refuses to learn anything else. All I want is the basic sit and lay down. I've been training my pets for years, and have never had this problem before. She won't train for any kind of treat (she walks away if I don't give it to her after about 15 seconds) or praise or toys. I just don't know what else to try. Any suggestions? |
You could start by just saying the command as she does it. When you see her lie down, say it and give her a treat. Find a treat that she really loves and only give it to her for training. Maybe chicken? Good luck. |
Could it be your training session is too long and she is loosing interest? She is a puppy. A training session with a puppy shouldn't last too long. At the end of the session the puppy should still want play or learn. If the puppy is tired or loose interest in the end of the session, the training session may be too long. Cut the the training session to shorter intervals. Or could it be that expects a reward and if she doesn't see a reward she lose interest? Some dog will not obey ONLY if there is a reward at the end of it. If the dog doesn't see the treats, the dog will quickly lose interested and leave. If your dog is one of those, teach the same command over and over again. At first you reward the dog all the time with a treat. After a while randomly skip an reward. Over a couple of months, slowly phase out the reward until the dog will do the command regardless of an reward. Hopefully one of these tips will help. Good luck. |
What age? our local petsmart store has puppy training. What age should we start this, is 9 wks too young? |

Do not start your puppy in puppy training class until your puppy have all its vaccinations. I wouldn't even suggest you take him/her into a petstore until all the vaccination is done. I have seen people bring in puppies with Parvo into the petstore.  :thumbdown |
Thanks She has had her first set just last week and she will have her 2nd set on April 21st. Is it not ok to take her out after she has had her 1st set? |
It is not recommended. It takes awhile before your puppy will develop the immunity. Beside you are taking precaution for other people's bad choices. I would never take a sick pup out but people do it and if the sick dog get around your pup. Chances are that your pup can get sick. |
Yorkieagility, thank you for the advice. I actually took Reese to PetCo last week and she has only has her 1st set of shots. I carried her around and she never touched anything, but I suppose that was agianst my better judgement. Whoops! Thanks again! |
