Too many times pooping? I'm having problems potty training my 3month Yorkie, Napoleon. I've had him for 3 weeks. One of the problems is that he poops many times a day, but just a bit at a time. For an example, half an hour after he eats, I take him out... He will attempt to poop several times by going into his "pooping stance"... sometimes something will come out, other times, nothing. Then I bring him in after 30-45 mins. An hour or so later, he might poop again in his crate or in my living room or outside on patio. This happens several times throughout the day and night. Does anyone have this problem with their Yorkie? I haven't changed his diet. He eats dry food. It is not uncommon for him to poop several times a crate in his crate while I'm sleeping. What can I do? Will he grow out of this? |
I could be wrong but this is more than a training issue I think. It doesn't make sense that he goes into his poop mode and nothing comes out. Usually if they are in that mode it comes out. He seems to young to have anal gland issues. Is his stool to dry and hard? |
I had him about 2 days before he got struck with a bacterial infection (he had diarrhea for a bit..). So he was on antibiotics for a week during which time he was on canned food. After that week, I switched to dry food and his stool appears "normal" -- ie not too dry and hard and not too watery. I dunno what's bugging him. I wish I knew what he was like before he got that bacterial infection... |
Did he have coccidia? |
It was spirochetes I think. |
The trying to poop with nothing or very little coming out makes me think he might be constipated. When he does poop are they small? In any case, what I would do is give him a little piece of raw carrot. Works wonders for constipation when Joey has had it. If that makes him too loose, you should easily be able to firm him back up by sprinkling a little cooked rice over his food. |
Food I was just curious...What do most ppl feed there puppies @ 5 months old...I have heard.. Purina and Science Diet Puppy? What is most common and would be the best for my baby Tiny? |
This is my first time on here so I may need some or alot of advice...This is also my very first Yorkie and I just want him to be healthy. |

How do I get to the replys? do they just come up on the screen or do you have to press something to be able to see your reply after I say something? |
Actually - puppies and younger dogs go to the bathroom more often than older dogs do ------ don't you remember changing those diapers when we had babies???? I wouldn't worry about it - I would make sure the hair on his little behind is cut short so that nothing sticks to it. Carol Jean |
serelind- I have 4 older yorkies (well my girl is 5 and so are her two brothers), I have their niece and daughter (of one of the boys) and she is 3. I had problems training them because I do not agree in caging my dogs. Now I have 2 puppies from my three year old and I am going nuts!!! I work all day and my mom stays home and they do poop all day. I am lucky that they sleep in a little bed next to mine since they were 3 months old and I scold them to stay in it and they (sort of) sleep all night. Sometimes they poop during the night but I take them out around 9:00 p.m. and they poop outside then I put them in their bed. Most of the time now they sleep all night and I take them out at 6:00 a.m. and again they poop and pee. Meanwhile I go get dressed to go to work and about 30 minutes later I come back and they have pooped in the kitchen where I keep them with a baby door. Sometimes they are Ok and my mom gets up and finds poop anyway around 8:00 a.m. I only feed them dry food and the same as the adults, Beneful which is great because it has beef and chicken and vegetables. Eventually they will poop only after they eat but it takes time to train. I am having trouble even though they go when I take them out and sometimes during the day they go out and sometimes not. Have patience. and good luck |
:( Buddie will do his business on his whee whee pad when he is in his area. If I let him out to run the house for playtime....he will pee and poop where ever he wants to. He doesnt go on the whee whee pad. I cannot figure this out to save my life. He is stubborn! But, I will fight the fight and win. Buddie will catch on sooner or later......I hope. |

I feed my baby Royal Canin puppy 33. My puppy is eight months old and poops once a day sometimes two. I will soon be switching over to Blue Buffaloe. |
Thanks everyone for your input. I'll be patient and hopefully Napoleon will grow out of this frequent pooping stage. My biggest fear was there was something physically wrong with him. But it appears my yorkie is not alone in what he's doing. Yes, I do realize that babies do this kind of stuff often, but whenever I read about other puppies and how they only poop once or twice a day and it made me concerned about mine as he is very different! Another thing about Napoleon that is frustrating is that he gets very easily distracted outside by a million things -- cars, dogs, cats, grass, poop from other dog, ants, dirt -- to the point that he's too busy investigating the object of distraction that he forgets to poop!! Which is sometimes why I bring him in after a hour of him not pooping and when he gets in his grate, he gets so bored he remembers it's time to poop and does it right there! Grr! LOL. Ah well, hopefully he will grow out of this! |
don't worry he will. Tigger did the above mentioned for awhile as well. He's now eight months old and no longer does any of it. what food are you feeding him? |

What is the best way to train a 2mth old Yorkie with out buying a book R Redman |
I guess I have the opposite problem. I have read alot of stuf that says yorkies need to go right after eating. My little guy seems to go hours later. So I wait around nervously till he goes. He goes about 3-4 times a day. Often I take him out for soo long, over 30mins, and he doesnt go. Then I bring him in and he goes on the kitchen floor. I don't know if i should be concerned or not. |

He currently eats Nature's Choice dry puppy food. Since Monday he's had very little appetite. It used to be I would feed him like 3/4 cup a day of food and he ate all of it, plus he'd watch me avidly while I ate! (Meaning he still could eat more if I gave him more). But nowadays, he barely touches the food, so I'm not sure what the problem is. He's been eating at most 1/4-1/2 cup of food a day. |
patience is the best way. It took tigger about six to seven months in our home to learn fully how to go outside. meaning he no longer had accidents in the house. Believe me he'll soon develope his own signals for you to learn when he has to go potty. My best advice is hang in there. these little guys can be very stubborn and naughty so just be patient and it'll pay off in the long run. Best of Luck. Oh with the dog food, make sure that the first three ingrediants are either meat, a meat by-product or some form of rice. If corn is in the first three thats possibly what could cause him to go so often. Corn is a filler and isn't all that digestible so often times it just goes through their system lickity split. I hope this helps. |
