Homer snarled at me!

Hi, I haven't posted for awhile. Homer is now 11 weeks old. He is a good puppy most days but he does like to chew. He likes the taste of fooey... the bitter apple like stuff my vet said to try and he still likes to bite my hands... he hardly ever bites my husbands. Tonight, he was chewing on our coffee table and was saying no several times then finally picked him up to flip him on his back (what my vet said to do to show him who is boss) and he was trying ti bite my hands and he even snarled at me. He has never done this before and I was wondering if anyone else has or had this problem and offer a solution.

Thanks,
Kara

I think they test you, in their process of figuring out who the "alpha dog" is (and it should be YOU). We have only had a couple of those incidents, followed by me scolding him and letting him know that is not an acceptable behaviour. I'll even take away his bone from time to time just to test him...and have no problems at all these days! Good luck puppy training and congrats on your new pup! :)

Im Having problems just like you are, only his little attitude turns on around bed time! almost like he becomes possessed  He sleeps in bed with us, (computer is bedroom) and when I am on the computer, he will sit on the bed and bark at me I assume it means get off to time for bed? So I lay down with him and then possession takes over  he growles, bites HARD!! (Breaks the skin hard) and attacks me and he wont stop! jumps in my face, just becomes a totaly different little baby (Sami is 15 weeks) Then I grab him lay him on his back & go through the sayings stop, no, badboy, stop etc.. then when he somewhat is listening I hug and kiss on him he then begins to calm down and kisses me back crawl's up to his pillow and he falls asleep! :) this has been going on every night! is anyone having simular periods like this?
Please let me know how you stop it or how you made them stop, im thinking he gets overtired and can't wind down

toby likes to play before bedtime....... maybe this is what you should try, play and get him worn out before bed. . . it usually takes a few minuits to calm down but i think that is mostly puppy hood..... My boy used to be a lot like that before bed (cept the dominnce thing, he always knew i was alpha person in the house). . but now toby is great, i say night night and he runs to teh bedroom :p

Wow, sorry to hear of your problems :( . I am definetely the alpha and have no problems with my pup. She will sometimes make a little strange sound (not really a growl) and bark when I get her brush or sweater out but it's all play. She has the classic rear up front paws down position when she does it and will bite on the rare occasion but never with any pressure at all. Can you talk to the breeder? My pup comes from a show breeder but the are very particular on temperment stake their name on it.

Good luck, hopefully someone can give you some good advice.

Growl back. Loud. It works wonders. :)

AMANDA!!! I love that!! My daughter actually has an awesome growl!! I just wonder what people heard us growling at the dog! My husband would think I had for sure gone crazy!!! I love it!!

Hefner has growled at my daughter and I had even had an experience a the vet last week where they "he wouldn't let them give him his shot"!! He is only 3 lbs and I can't imagine what htye meant exactly, but he got the nasal vaccine! I just tell him "NO" in a strong tone! I try not to over use that word, but it definately appropriate in the face of aggression.

Our problem I think is partially a new puppy in the house, a little jealousy and the fact that he dominates her so he thinks he can dominate us now!!! He is testing us in other words!

I have a similar problem which has been going on way too long. My yorkie knows that I am her mommy. I take care of her. She is trained to potty outside...and boy does she love going outdoors. So much so that I normally have to force her to come back inside. To avoid going back inside she will plant her feet down in the pine straw flower beds and refuse to move. If I go to pick her up she starts snarling, thrashing around, and showing her teeth. SHe is basically like a toddler throwing a temper tantrum. She doesn't do this to my husband though (he RARELY takes her outside, but he says she never acts bad about coming back inside). She also does this at night when she gets sleepy. Everynight she falls asleep in my lap and when I need to get up she snarls and snaps at me. She will try to jump back on the couch and grumbles as I make her go to her house for bed time. My husband says she doesn't normally do this to him, only on occassion. He gets to spend more time playing with her than I do...I am the one that takes care of her though. Does she not see me as the alpha and how can I change this behavior??? I usually scold her but it hasn't changed her behavior. Please give me some advice!!

To get her to see you as the alpha dog put her on her back. You wont hurt her. Have you ever watched dogs play and one ends up on the back with the other one standing over them. This is Alpha dog establishment. It doesn't matter if she gets mad be consistant and hold her there until she stops. I would do this everytime she growls at me. You just need to show her who is boss.
