Not Socialized We have an 11 month old Yorkie (we got her when she was 8 wks old). She is my very first dog (and it has been SUCH a learning experience). Here is the problem... I think that I have overprotected her so much, that now she is not well socialized around other people and dogs. She sees visitors when they come to our house (our neighbors, friends, and family) and she plays with other dogs occasionally (another yorkie, and a lab), but the other day my husband and I took her to Petsmart, and she was really scared of the people and dogs there. The other dogs were so excited to see one another, tails wagging, but our little Mia hated it! She even snapped at a dog that was trying to play with her. I left there feeling like a terrible mother. Is it too late to socialize her, and what should I get her involved in? I don't want to shock her! Please HELP! |
Maybe she just felt shy or overwhelmed. Stewie is very personable and friendly, but he acts like a fool at petsmart, too. He hates it. I think he gets upset by all of the smells. Maybe Mia goes there and she feels intimidated. I think that if she's good w/ dogs in smaller groups and quieter areas, she's doing well :) |
better late than never! so it's good to start socializing mia with other dogs and people now. maybe start with a more quiet or personal setting than petsmart. playdates, small dog playgroups, or even doggy daycare are a great way to start socialization. bunjee was a bit timid around other dogs at first too. he's still a bit of a breed snob, he plays betters with other yorkies than other breeds, but he's coming around. :D |
I totally agree. slow does it. Playdates, dog parks, and such are good ways to begin and when you do go to PETsMART or petco just let her ride in the cart or hold her as to not stress or frighten her too much. |
I Would Like To Add... When she shows signs of fear don't make a big deal. I would suggest to watch Cesar Milan "Dog Whisperer". Good Luck |
Wow we have the same situation. We got her at 8 weeks and she is now 11 months. We walk her and when she gets around other dogs she seems scared and she sometimes barks at them. We are going to remedy this by taking her to the dog park starting this saturday to get her better socialize with dogs. She's fine with people so we just have to work on dogs. |
I think you just need to socialize the dog more. Jaxon is almost 6 months and often very timid with new dogs. I took him to puppy classes purely for the socialization. Also we went to a 'Meet Up' group and I'm hoping that will help. See if there is a group near you: www.meetup.com |
Your experience should be a lesson for a lot of other people. We certainly can overprotect our little guys and not give them opportunities to be around other people and dogs. I, for one, don't haul my dog around with me much - but he does have a lot of company here - and we visit my neighbors, friends, and relatives at their houses. He totally loves other people and every dog he has met so far. I took him to PetCo once and had him on a leash - but he wanted to go home with everyone he met. So, he rides in the cart now (which is probably better for him anyway). I have always encouraged people to step up and visit with my dog...even pet him. We have never been where I thought this might be dangerous or unhealthy. And, he thrives on it! Carol Jean Carol Jean |
It sounds to me like she was feeling insecure.. But they cannot be rushed. I'veposted the Dog Whisperer website many times, because he addresses all of these issues. so here it is again. http://www.dogchannel.com/dog/expert...aspx?WT.srch=1 |

I have an 11 month old baby who loves everyone and every dog, and my niece has a 2 year old who is just the opposite. Fortunately for me I got to see how she acted with Oliver and I did a lot of the opposite. I don't take George everywhere with me, but everyone in my family has dogs so I do take him to their houses. My brother has a beagle and he can overwhelm George sometimes which scares me, but I will just hold him and let them sniff each other. The first time I was nervous but now him and George play great together. Just take her around other dogs slowly she will come around. Oh and no you are not a terrible Mom she is probably just overwhelmed :D |
