Need help leaving puppy My Max came to us a week ago today. He is 16 weeks old. He is really very good and rarely has accidents in the house. I put him in a playpen when I need to get things done in the house and/or go on the internet. He doesn't seem to mind too much because it has a mesh wall so he can see me. When he can't seem me he screams and whines. I play with him outside his play pen a lot during the day off and on. I know I'm not spoiling him as much as some of you all do but here's my problem. How can I go to the gym without putting him through major anxiety issues? Also I forgot who mentioned this but the corn syrup mixed in the food was wonderful. I took about 4 tbsp of water, mixed with about 1 tbsp of corn syrup and soaked his breakfast in there for about 2 minutes, mixing it up a bit. He ate almost every bite without me having to hand feed. Now if I could just be able to go to the gym I'd have it made. |
Try leaving him for shot period of time during the day, maybe 15 minutes 3 or 4 times a day make sure he has a toy with him and try leaving a radio or tv on. Good luckl |
Thanks for your suggestions. I do leave him to go to the gym. I just hate that he whines so strongly about it. I have one more quick question. How long can you leave a 16month old yorkie in his crate or in his playpen. I have a party I was invited to on Sunday but I am thinking I should't go. |
Pixie is 7 months and she's in her playpen all day while we're at work (which is about 9 hours from when we leave in the morning to when we get home). I Just make sure she has everything she could need in there. I have a feeling she just sleeps when we aren't around.... I hate doing it, but I don't have much of a choice. |
Max is only 16 weeks--just shy of 4 months. Would you say 6 hours is ok as long as he has water, toys and a pad? |
Give him a frozen kong filled with peanut butter when you leave. He will associate you leaving with yummy things like a kong. When I pick up Loki's kong and get the peanut butter out Loki BOLTS to his crate and sits there and waits for it. I don't know about leaving him for that long. We trained Loki to go potty outside so when he was 16 weeks he could only be left alone for about 30-60 mins or he'd pee in his crate. He's almost a year and a half now and I still don't leave him for 6 hours - 5 at the most. I hope by the time he's 2 he can hold it 8 hours for emergencies when he needs to be left home and no one can watch him. I hate to do it because I can't feed him or give him any water while I'm gone. (If I leave water in his crate he drinks it all immediately and saves none, then he has to pee.) Anyway, I don't like pee-pads so I don't know how much that changes things. Can he go 6 hours without eating?? At that age I fed Loki 3 times a day. Now he only eats twice a day. Can you take him to your party? :D |
Thanks so much for your response. The breeder had him eating twice a day so that's what I do and he seems to be fine. I am outside training too so I think I will have to pass on this week's party. Nope I cannot take him its not that casual and it would be indoors. I leave him for 60 minutes every day to go to the gym. I've only had him a week but so far he has only messed twice in my absense. Well I think I pretty much new the answer to this question when I asked but thought I'd try anyway. Thanks all |
Put him in a crate and go to the gym. Ginger still has to be in her crate while I’m at the gym and she’s 8 months old. It’s first thing in the morning so she sleeps the whole time anyway. If she wakes up she has chew stuff in there to keep her busy. If she barks and cries I’m not there to hear it. I know you love your new baby, but you have to make sure he doesn’t start running your life. It took me months before I realized I had become a slave to a 3 lb puppy. Now I like to think I have a good balance. Take good care of both of you. |
