Yorkie Playing Rough With New Baby Sister Hi, I have a 2 year old Yorkie, Gidget. I just got a 4 month old shih tzu, Yasmin. Gidget plays very rough with her so much so that we cannot leave them alone in the house. Gidget, the yorkie, starts playfully nipping the shih tzu and the shih tzu gets very agitated that she starts barking at her and chasing her around the house until Gidget is on top of the shih tzu biting her all over! We are very worried about Yasmin......I hope you can help me with this because there are times during the day that we need to go out of the house and they will be alone. Gidget is also aggressive outside the house, she growls at people when we walk her so we alsways have to keep her on a leash... Daydee |
Yorkie baby driving my older dog crazy daydee: I am having the same problem I have an 11 week old yorkie and 3 year old bischon and the yorkie drives the bischon nuts. She is always jumping on the bischon and biting her on the ears, back, face or anything she can get a hold of. She will grab the end of the bischons collar and hold on and be drug around the bischon growls all the time but has never acted mean towards her I finally have to seperate them so the bischon can get some peace any suggestions would be greatly appreciated will this last forever?? |
A thought.... I think your older dog is trying to say who is in charge... We have a 12 year old Lhasa.. and she was the alpha dog when her brother was alive... Now she just lays around... We are bring home a 10 week old pup this weekend... and I know I am going to have to monitor the interaction between the two.. My old gal is not going to want to play all the time... where as the young pup will be full of energy (like any young pup should be)... The old gal will snip to say "I have had enough..." but that snip may be a bit dangerous for a young pup... I would separate them when you are not around... and monitor their together time... Until your puppy is old enough to hold his own! |
My 8-week old Yorkie pup drove my 4-year-old Bichon nuts also - doing the same things that yours does. My Yorkie is 7 months old now and is definitely better, but still does bother and want to play with the Bichon a lot. I'm at my desk now and the Bichon always wants up on the desk to lie down and get away from the pup when I'm here. This works out good. Sometimes, I put the Bichon on my bed and close the door so he can take a peaceful nap. My Bichon (older) goes outside without the pup a lot and lies on the patio and gets a good rest. Good luck - you just have to be creative. And, remember the puppy's getting a little older helps also. Carol Jean |
I separate the two older dogs from the puppy, Tuck currently. He is too playful for the others. They are all together only when I'm supervising and that's a brief period. Pixie has no patience for Tuck but not snapping anymore. The Peke looks like he'll go into cardiac arrest after 5 minutes of playing with Tuck. Jessica |
I have a 9 year old pom who is very snappy even with us. When I got Cali I was really worried because Maya is very territorial and under my bed is her domain. If you even try to get something out from under there you risk your hand. We just watched them whenever we had them together and they would have their little spats but no one was ever hurt. Cali can run much faster than Maya which helps. Even today 7 months later they have to be watched if food is involved, but it is definately better now they will lay next to each other a lot. I would just watch and let them work it out as long as one doesn't get hurt. |
alpha I am ordering this book..... 'Outnumbered, for mutiple dog home' and I will read up on it too. I have a new 15 week old puppy and I have 5 other dogs but one girl is the alpha. She is now pinning the pup down but just letting the new baby knoes who is boss. Yesterday she did it on top of me and I slowly slipped my hand under and turned the puppy upside down so her belly will show...... which means she's submissing to my older girl. My older girl then gave her kisses..... it was sweet. |
Thanks to all.....it has been more than a week since I got the shih tzu and the 2 of them are definitely getting used to each other. Gidget still plays rough with her, but, I know that it is just playing and nobody gets hurt. We can now leave them alone in the house. I was so worried before because I was not sure whether Gidget wanted to hurt the younger one or not. Now....we have the problem of Gidget taking whatever the younger one is playing with! If she gets the stuffed bear...Gidget grabs it from her....if she gets the bully stick...Gidget grabs it from her, even if she is already chewing on the other bully stick! We try to stop her, whenever we can....but, we cannot supervise this 24 hours a day....I would appreciate any suggestions on this.... |
Chachi does that to Jewels too. As Jewels has gotten older though she hass gotten to wear she will fight back to keep what she has. They will work it out between themselves in time. |
my "queen", a mix breed abt 25 lbs, didnt like Tootie AT ALL because he was so bouncy, he wore out my lab daily... he is 7 months old now, and is getting really good about knowing when to leave the older dogs alone... I never leave him alone with the lab just because of size but they have all seemed to figure it out... He is my puter buddy and always lays with me at night which he never did when he was younger. d |
