? for crate trainers My two puppies are 11 weeks old and we are crate training. They are doing well for the most part. They hold it through the night and they never have an accident in the crate. I am trying to follow the instructions to the letter...but sometimes the little boy will just not go when I take him out. Yesterday it was 70 degrees and I stayed with him for 45 minutes...and nothing!!!!!!!!!!! I think I read some where that if they don't go that I need to put them back in the crate for like 10-15 minutes and start over. The little girl seems to be doing okay with it. As long as I am consistent with her she doesn't have many accidents...our little boy Tucker is stubborn with a capital S! Any help would be appreciated...I just want them to empty out their bladder and bowels after being in the crate so we can just play. I hate having them in the crate...even though they seem to like it. We are also starting the clicker training...so if their is something I should be doing with that concerning potty training I would love to know more. Thanks YT! |
Yes, if your little one does not go potty when taken out of the crate, you need to put him back in the crate for another 10 - 15 minutes and take him back out and keep up the regime until he does go. Also, you may need to keep him on a leash, so that he does not play while you are out there for 45 minutes. He needs to keep his mind on his business. The way I clicker trained Millie (assuming your pups are familiar with the clicker already) is I took her out, said "go potty" (probably had to say this several times, to re-focus her) as soon as she squatted I clicked. This sort of worked because she is very food oriented and when she heard the click, she stopped what she was doing and came for her treat. But I wanted to click at the onset of her going so she understood that was what I wanted. But a short period later, I only clicked after she was done, told her "good "go potty"" and treated her. Worked like a charm! I sort of let up when I thought she had it, but had to go back to it again, because she started goofing off again and I wanted her to go as soon as I told her too and not hang around for her to investigate every blade of grass. Now she has it, can go on command. This has helped immensely especially in the rain, snow and night time. |
Thanks for the info. I will keep trying. I think I am going to have to start taking them out separately because they just play with each other. Also, I tried the leash and Tucker thinks it is a toy and just won't leave it alone. I will have to work on the leash in the house so that it isn't such a big deal. I am having problems with the clicker just because my little ones don't really care about the treats. I have tried a few different things...but they just sniff my hand and leave the treat! I am going to keep at the clicker training...because they are so young still and I know I have a long road until I see any measurable progress. Anyone ever tried to train two puppies at once? Any helpful hits would be great...not many books on the subject that I could find! Thanks! |
The treats should be high quality treats, like hot dogs (millie never cared for those), cheese, canned chicken, freeze dried chicken, etc. I think it is a good idea to get them used to the leash inside the house. That is a good idea. Also taking them out separately, at least in the begining is a good idea too. I never trained 2 at one time, and I do appreciate the challanges associated with doing that. |
