Obedience school dropout I pulled Eddie out of obedience school this week after deciding it wasn't fun any longer for either of us. He's been doing various classes for 32 straight weeks, but in this "cruise control" class, they were having him back up in a circle, walk sideways in odd patterns and who knows what else. He was doing fine. He just didn't seem to enjoy it. He seemed afraid of the skills. What do others think of advanced obedience training? Is that fun for the dog? For you? Are those skills important outside of the obedience ring? |
I also have Teddy in obedience and my theory is when it stops being fun for him we will also stop doing it. So, I don't blame you for dropping him from the class. Eddie seems very athletic maybe it's time to find him and you a new sport to share together like agility. |

I don't blame you for dropping out when the fun ceases. We took Muffie and Missy through basic obedience and I have now ordered good training books and will train them myself here in our home. Good luck with whatever you decide to do. |
I agree. When it ceases to be fun for either you or Eddie, I think you should drop out. When I first got my Rowdy, I tried to take him to obedience training. It not only didn't help him, it made him worse. I talked to a well thought of trainer and he said, "Made him worse, didn't it?" I had already dropped out of the training. We did our training at home using tips from the trainers I trusted. Of courses he was a "problem child" not a super hero like Eddie. But "if Eddie aint havin' fun, ain't nobody havin' fun!" |
Gee, sounds like they were trying to teach Eddie to walk like I do! He doesn't need classes for that, just medication! |

Hi, I am new to this site. I have a 9 month old yorkie who listens really well in the house, if she gets out the door she is gone. I have enrolled her a beginning obedience class. however I am afraid of using a choke collar due to trachea collapse. could you please tell me what type of collar you used in class |

Welcome MYPepper1! I am originally from Minnesota too. I was born and raised there. As for your question when Ted is in obedience we use a harness and the trainer has no problem with that. If they insisted on me using something else I would find a different trainer. |
We also used the harness during training. We tried the Gentle Leader head harness and Missy would NOT budge. She hated it! They wear just a regular collar inside but when they go for walks, we put the harness on them. Whatever you do, don't use a choke collar on a Yorkie because of the trachea problem. If your trainer doesn't agree, walk away and get your money back! |
Thanks everybody. I appreciate you advice.... I am off to purchase a harness and a halti. The investment is low and I can try both..to see which works best for my little peanut.. |
