Training Treats I've purchased quite a few different types of treats in an attempt to begin training Bella. The problem is this: She doesn't eat! She gets "full" after 1 or 2 and then doesn't want anymore. I break them up into super tiny pieces but it still doesn't work. She'll eat 1 or 2 and then not want any. How do you all use treats for training? I heard of some using it in place of meals (only feeding during training). Is there a certain kind of treat that works great for you? |
Cheerios!!! Someone on here told me about them - and both my little picky eaters LOVE them. They will do anything for cheerios! And they are CHEAP! My 4 mo. old has learned to come, sit, do a (somewhat) longer sit, use the peepads, no bite - all for CHeerios! |
i use pupperoni broken up tiny snickers LOVES it |
I'll have to try those! So far she doesn't like Snausages (I tried slicing them up into litte pieces). I also bought Natures Recipes Training Treats but she won't eat those at all. Perhaps the Cheerios or Pupperoni's will work! :) |
I always have a lot of small pieces of chicken on hand (even in the freezer). My dogs love chicken. And, it's good for them. I'm not sure they'd ever get full. I try to save these only for rewards and training - so they stay the special treat they are. Carol Jean |
Do you have Pet Supplies Plus? We use Cloud Star's Itty Bitty Buddy Biscuits broken up in several pieces. Pieces about the size of 1/2 a cherrio. Cherrios work fine too but I've found these easier to toss. We also use Charlee Bears. If you buy a small package, they are smaller treats. The cheese flavored are the best. I get those at Petco and from Pet Edge online. The only "wet" treat I would use is plain chicken breast in tiny pieces. Since we do so much training, this would mean a lot of cooking! So we use dry treats. Things like puperonis can cause diarrhea in some pups. Also, just use kibble. On obedience class nights I just dump Loki's bowl into my treat bag and use that. No way is he getting 40 treats when I could just use his dinner! I already have to send him to daycare so he can run with the other dogs and not get fat! |
I use pupcorn. Its light like a cheeto and they love them. |
do the cheerios have to be broken in half? My baby is less then 2 lbs and Im kinda afraid to give her anything |
I use a mixture of tiny pieces of cooked liver, cheese and ham, sometimes chicken. It works best when she is fairly hungry and she might not eat much dinner afterwards. On walks i use her normal kibble--Royal Canin 33. |
I have had a couple and realized that she wants real and epensive treats. I still have some for 0.99 and she does not want to do anything for those and runs away. Now, I get her ones for $5 and she is learning fast. For example, today she learnt BANG, but we need to polish it off tomorrow a bit. So, try as many as you can and also try Capt'n Crunch. |
