What kind of treats? Hello All, I have a four month old Yorkie, Preston, who I'd like to start training. He's very small (I think) and weighs 30 oz. What kinds of treats should I give him and how much? Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks! |
Except for very special occasions, I avoid all treats that contain corn, wheat, oats, sugar and dairy products. Almost exclusively my three get my very own teeny tiny homemade liver treats. |
treats I uses Pup~peroni for training.Its soft and you can break it to the size you want. |
I use tiny pieces of ham,cheese and home-cooked liver. I also use her normal puppy kibble too. You have to choose a time when they are reasonably hungry for training,otherwise he might not want to eat it. It could replace a meal. |
In my experience...which isn't that much :) The Bill-Jac liver treats are the absolute best. Baby will do almost anything for those treats...She LOVES LOVES LOVES them. It's like Yorkie crack. |
What if you... How about making your own? Like dehydrate some chicken breasts, beef liver (Costco sells this) or something else that would be easy. |
Since I have a whole corral of critters, I do not use treats. I buy a different brand of dog food, sometimes not so good kind, and they consider them treats. Right now I am using Iams Daily Dental Mini-chunks as treats.. |
To a puppy one single rice crispie can be a treat, very tiny pieces of cheese not much more than a smell, Cherrios (one). They really work cheap! ;>))) There are also a lot of dog bisquit recipes online. |
i also use pup peroni...both my dogs love it......whenever we are in the front yard, i just keep a piece in my pocket and they stay near me always. it took nothing to train them w this treat. |
Those of you who keep a pocket full of something for the guys.....like I do....just remember to check your pockets before laundering - Not a pretty picture! :>))) Done that more than once! |
Loki gets diarrhea from things like Puperoni. Just be careful and read the ingredients. We found some GREAT treats at Pet Supplies Plus. They are by Cloud Star and called "Itty Bitty Buddy Biscuits" I like them because they are small to begin with and can be tossed easily (I have a hard time tossing cherrios they don't travel far!) BUT I also break them into SMALLER pieces. I'd say one treat is about the size of 2 cherrios and I usually break them into 4 pieces. Plus they are all natural and come in 7 flavors. Loki likes molasses and peanut butter the best. Hope this helps! |

I think "good healthy food" is the best treat. I buy roasted chickens (which we share) or cook a lot of chicken occasionally. I cut it in small pieces and put it in baggies - some in the freezer. Other meats and good food would be great also. These are what I use for treats. I don't know why - but I think dogs treats are like junk food. Of course, my dogs get them occasionally, but they'd much rather have a piece of chicken or something like that, and I know it's much healthier for them. Carol Jean |
For potty training I use turkey dogs. Now, it's not the healthiest thing in the world but it works. She gets so excited when she sees her potty treats. :D For basic training I give her yogurt drops. I just break them in half. |
Zoey is five months and I've always given her carrots. Sounds crazy but she loves them. You can buy those little tiny skinny ones and I usually break them in half but not always. Theya are also easy to take places and don't stink if you forget them in your pocket. I tried cherrios but she wouldn't eat them, maybe I should try the flavored kind. She also loves cheese but will eat anything. I too, like to stick the natural stuff. Not sure about all the packaged treats. Zoey will eat bananas, lettuce, chicken, just about anything. I just keep it simple and natural and no junk food! Hope this helps! Zoey's mom |
