Train to Give Paw? My yorkie knows how to sit but now I want to train him to give me his paw. How do I do this? So far I have just been telling him to sit and I grab his paw and say give me paw. Is there another way of training him to give me his paw? |
That is exactly how we taught our girls, except for we say "give me five"....it took lots of doing that but one day they just caught on!!! Now they can do it no problem... |

Tiger took puppy training and they refer that as "SHAKE" for shake hands. When I tell him to shake, he puts up his paw and waits for you to shake it. It took me 2 days of training and then suddenly EUREKA he got it. Now, whenever you say sit then shake, he does it all the time. . . |
I guess terminology is minor as long as you keep it consistant. We say "handshake". After repeating for 5 minutes or so, Aggie will lift her paw in mid-air, waiting for "handshake" and then her treat. It cracks me up :D :D |
Thanks for the help. I will try it. |
You can hold on the treat and let your puppy try to eat it. Don't release the treat until your puppy lifts his or hers paw onto your hands then you let go of the treat for your puppy. Keep doing that and she they will get it. But you must also repeat the command. After time you don't even have to say it they will just do it. |
I have been trying to get Pippa to give her paw for god knows how long but she just wont. She sits and lays down but no paw!! My friend has a blue merle collie and she can wave on command, jump thru a hoop, turn around, and more and she's only 1yr old. it is fab to see :D |
Both Alfie and Lottie will give a paw on commmand and what we did was hold a treat in your clenched hand in front of them and when they paw it click and treat then start adding in the command paw and it goes from there just dont open your hand until a paw goes up , then we started holding the hand up higher for a high 5 and repeat the high 5 command for this.just try it a few times a day and they start to get it good luck |
Great suggestions. I will try them. |
My little guy and I just learned this in training school last week. The easiest way is to use the clicker method. Have him/her sit and then say "paw" and gently lift the pad of the paw, click, then treat. My yorkie caught on very quickly! Now I just put my hand out and say paw and he knows what to do :) |

Puppies are cute. I was teaching my to "sit," and would give him a treat. Now, because puppies never miss a thing, every time he thinks I have something he can eat - he runs over to me and sits without me telling him to. (I keep telling him that he is supposed to wait until I tell him to "sit," not just do it on his own.) Carol Jean |

Anyone who calls my house learns that Skylar insists on getting my attention to give her five. She is left-pawed and will wave that paw til I give her five. Have to do it a few times and then tell her "enough"..They really do get our number quickly, huh?? |
Maisy seemed quite quick at learning but 'give me paw' was one of the hardest for her to grasp. I stuck by it and just kept doing the command over and over she got there in the end!!! it just take determination :D good luck!! PS im trying to teach maisy to roll over dont really know where to start on that on but so far ive taught her to sit then lie down now i think i can do the roll over!!! its so fun :D |
I tried teaching Eddie to "shake" for weeks and I wasn't getting there. I was doing exactly what you're doing. I'd tap his paw, say "shake," then give him a treat. He never got past the tap phase. Two days ago, a friend said "Don't give him the treat." Say "shake," and if he doesn't shake, walk away and try later. I was skeptical, but by the next day, he was raising his paw at the word "shake." I was just being too nice with treats. |
I just bought a clicker and started trying to teach him to give me his paw. So far he hasn't done it but I guess it is too soon . How long did it take those of you who taught your dog with the clicker? |

I have tried to teach Oliver to shake for awhile now. I always give up- but i read this thread yesterday and got some new ideas. I have never used clicker method so I didn't go for that but I used sit and "paw" and used the treat as a way to get him to do what i wanted. He picked it up in just a coupld of minutes. Sometimes he gets so excited he throws both paws at me! whever he learns a new trick he'll preform it, get his treat, and run around the house a couple of times and then sit in front of me to do it again. Does anyone else get a kick out of their puppies? haha He's hilarious! He's sprint around to et all the excited energy out so he can preform a trick! I hope everyone is havign a good day! My bab y is sleepin gwhile I type up a 5 page paper! Blah!!!! Have a good day! |

Keep doing this then start introducing the down word . Good luck it takes lots of pratice, and if he does not get it ,finish up with something he can do so you end up with a positive thing. |

Trying to train Zoey So, I think I may have one of the most stubborn yorkies of all time, she knows how to sit but when I try to grab her paw to teach her the trick she stands up, any advice?!?!?!?!?! |
That is how I did it with Bentley, I started with a special treat, I bake sweet potato chunks and he knows that he only gets them when he does good sitting. Once he got the sit thing down, I trained him to shake, which he know does too. Keep it up you are doing it right. My next trick is trying to get him to lay down, we are working on that now. |
